MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Saint Francis women's volleyball finished day two of the Mustang Tournament going 2-0 and 3-1 collectively. They beat SUNY Poly 3-0 and SUNY Morrisville 3-2.
In the first set against SUNY Poly, the Red Wolves jabbed at the chance to take the lead with a 9-0 run. Kylie Rauch set Ana Andrades-Villa up for the kill to give Saint Francis the fuel. Andrades-Villa registered an ace to follow while Ava Holden collected back-to-back solo blocks. Holden grabbed another solo block and a kill during the run. Rauch added another kill to her stat line to win the set 25-18.
The Red Wolves had a hot second set blowing the competition out 25-4 with several huge runs. Although that did not stop them from letting up on the gas. They took the third and final set 25-11 with help from Rauch, Alexandra Sappia, Madison Roman, Laura Thomas, and Allie Dziabo.
During the second game against SUNY Morrisville, the Red Wolves fought their way through five sets to take the 3-2 victory. It all started with a scrappy second set where Saint Francis pulled out on top with a 26-24 win. A 7-1 run gave some fuel to the Red Wolves. Sappia set up Roman for a kill followed by back-to-back aces from Sappia. Thomas stepped up in the middle grabbing a kill right before Roman collected another kill. Holden and Rauch finished off the set with kills.
After gaining the fourth set and forcing a fifth set, Saint Francis did not give any easy points to Morrisville. Emmi Adrian stepped behind the line late in the fifth when the Red Wolves had a 11-9 lead. She hammered off aces, grabbing three straight and giving Saint Francis game point. After her serve it was game over for Morrisville. Sappia set up Holden in the middle for the game winning kill.
Allie Dziabo and Rita Medland both recorded their first collegiate game against SUNY Poly.
Roman ended the day with 33 kills and 15 digs.
Sappia finished with 57 assists, 15 aces, and 14 digs.
Holden collected 13 kills, four solo blocks, and a hitting percentage of .333 the first game.
Andrades-Villa registered 34 digs.
Head Coach Sara Spielvogel stated, "I'm beyond impressed with how well our young squad bounced back today. Both matches we served great and when the intensity was high we kept our composure and kept working. Our upperclass leadership from Alex and Ava was top notch and a big reason for us coming out on top in 5."
The Red Wolves return to action this weekend, September 12, at 1 p.m and 3 p.m. Saint Francis will take on Wilson and Elizabethtown on the road in Elizabethtown, Pa.
