BROOKLYN, N.Y. (Oct. 5, 2007) – Senior Jarron Brooks (Mitchellville, Md/Archbrishop ) (Mitchellville, Md. / Archbishop Carroll) had a goal and an assist and junior goalkeeper Brad Williams (San Lorenzo, CA/Arroyo) (San Lorenzo, Calif. / Arroyo) stopped eight shots to lead the Saint Francis University men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory at St. Francis-NY in both teams' Northeast Conference openers on Friday afternoon.
Freshman Tyler Hibbs (St. Catherine, Canada / Governor Simcoe) tallied the game-winner in the 76th minute for his first career goal to help give head coach Michael Casper his first win in the NEC. Casper became the first head men's soccer coach in school history to win his first NEC contest.
The Red Flash improved to 3-5-1 overall, and 1-0 in the NEC. They will continue their two-game road swing with a 1 p.m. contest at Long Island on Sunday.
Hibbs drilled in a rebound with 12:59 remaining to give the visiting Red Flash a 2-1 victory at Aviator Sports & Recreation Complex.
Brooks set up the game-winner as he fired a shot from 12 yards out from the right side. Terriers keeper Chris Antonino made a diving save, but Hibbs was right in position to knock in the game-winner from point-blank range.
The Terriers opened the scoring as senior Diego Martinez beat Red Flash keeper Williams just 2:46 into the match with a right-footed blast to the lower right corner of the net. Freshman John Sallhag was credited with his third assist of the season as he carried the ball into the box and spotted Martinez, who was free in the center for a wide open attempt.
However, Brooks made a sensational play to even the score with 26:09 remaining in the contest off a feed from Tice. The senior was able to chip the ball high in the air from 18-yards out as Terriers Antonino was caught out of the net. Antonino tried to make a recovery and prevent the ball from crossing the goal line but was just a step too late to make the stop.
