SFU Women’s Soccer Team Drops NEC Opener in Heartbreaking Fashion

LORETTO, Pa. (Oct. 5, 2007) – The Saint Francis women's soccer team gave up two unanswered own goals in a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat against Fairleigh Dickinson in both teams' Northeast Conference openers on Friday afternoon at the Stokes Soccer Complex.

The Red Flash took a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute on a goal from freshman Chelsea Traurig (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) (McMurray, Pa. / Peters Township). Senior Lauren Popovich (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas Institute) (Rochester, N.Y. / Aquinas Institute) hit her with a perfect pass down the right flank from midfield. Traurig dribbled into the 18-yard box and let loose a shot from the right into the left corner of the net for a 1-0 SFU lead at 33:52.

But the Knights would tie the match back up at 42:42 on an own goal. The ball was played into the 18-yard box from near midfield and hit off the head of a Saint Francis defender into the left side of the net.

The Knights would score the game-winner on another own goal, this time off a cross. The ball was played into the six-yard box where it was deflected off a Red Flash defender into a teammate, and then into the right corner of the net.

Saint Francis controlled much of the action throughout with a 12-7 advantage in shots, and a 9-0 edge in corner kicks.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Boyer (Pittsburgh, Pa/Mount Lebanon) (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Mount Lebanon) stopped four shots in the loss.

Fairleigh Dickinson keeper Rachel Derrico made three saves.

Saint Francis (3-7-1) will try to bounce back with a 1 p.m. contest on Sunday against Sacred Heart.
