LORETTO, Pa. (Oct. 19, 2008) – Freshman forward
Parnell Hegngi (Silver Spring, MD/DeMatha Catholic) (Silver Spring, Md. / DeMatha Catholic) came off the bench to score his first career goal and lead the Saint Francis men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over St. Francis-NY on Sunday afternoon at the Stokes Soccer Complex.
Hegngi entered the contest at the 37:35 mark and didn't wait long to make his presence known. It was just under two minutes later that junior
Daniel Moir (Christchurch, New Zealand/Shirley Boys) (Christchurch, New Zealand / Shirley Boys) fed a pass into a clearing for Hegngi. He then targeted a shot into the upper-90 for his first career goal to give the Red Flash a 1-0 lead at 39:25. Freshman
Taylor Powers (Petaluma, Calif./Casa Grande) (Petaluma, Calif. / Casa Grande) also received an assist on the goal, which came off of a set piece on a corner kick.
Hegngi's goal sent the Terriers into halftime with their first deficit of the season. Sophomore goalkeeper
Darius Motazed (North Vancouver, Canada/Sentinel Secondary) (North Vancouver, Canada / Sentinel Secondary) stopped two shots in the match to secure his third shutout of the season and help Saint Francis snap a three-match losing skid.
The Red Flash handed St. Francis-NY its first NEC loss of the season in improving to 4-8-1 overall and 1-3 in the league. The Terriers lost for just the second time on the season, falling to 10-2-1 overall, and 3-1 in the NEC. Saint Francis will try to build some momentum on the season when it travels to Fairleigh Dickinson and Sacred Heart next Friday and Sunday, respectively.
The Red Flash had two golden opportunities in the closing minutes to put the match out of reach, but St. Francis-NY goalkeeper Chris Antonino made a pair of terrific saves. With 7:28 remaining in the contest, sophomore forward
Owen Gombami (Pumula North Bulawayo, Simbabwe/Mzilikazi) (Pumula North Bulawayo, Zimbabwe / Mzilikazi) was fed a long pass from sophomore
Brent Brockman (Dillsburg, PA/Northern York) (Dillsburg, Pa. / Northern York) down the left sideline. Antonino came out to cut off the ball, but Gombami got past him and took a right turn toward the 18-yard box as he had just one defender to beat. However, Antonino recovered and came running back into the box to dive and save Gombami's shot.
Junior
Brian Murphy (Newbury, OH/West Geauga) (Chesterland, Ohio / West Geauga) and Moir nearly set up another goal with 3:16 to play in the game. Murphy fed Moir with a pass near the left flag. Moir sent a perfect cross to the far post, where freshman
David Butler (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) (Baltimore, Md. / Loyola Blakefield) was able to one-time the pass toward the lower right corner of the net. However, Antonino again made a tremendous save to keep it a 1-0 Red Flash contest.
