Hershey, Pa. (05/02/2008) – The Red Flash came together for a five-man score of 300 (+60) on Friday to set themselves just seven strokes off of Central Connecticut State's first place count of 293 following the Northeast Conference Championships' first round of play hosted by the folks at the Hershey Links Golf Club. At this time, Saint Francis sits in fifth place out of 11 squads.
Saint Francis looks to recapture the NEC crown from their 2006 expedition after Monmouth clipped the Flash by one stingy stroke in the 2007 end-of-the-season bonanza.
Mount St. Mary's Jeff Kingsbury set the standard on the 6,899-yard test, putting forth a three-deep 69 (34-35). Three other loopers, Central Connecticut's Matt McClure, Monmouth's Anthony Campanile and Long Island's Rocky Co lag one shot behind with -2, 70s.
Currently on SFU's behalf, senior crusher Matt Gowdy (London, Ontario/A.B. Lucas) (London, Ontario / A.B. Lucas) blasted the Flash's lowest round of an even-par 72 (36-36), tied for sixth with four other fellow NEC competitors.
First-year fireballer Joey Amelia (Chatham, Ontario/Chatham Kent Secondary) (Chatham, Ontario/Chatham-Kent Secondary) came into his own under the demands of the conference finale, firing his lowest round to date of a +2, 74 (35-39). Amelia is knotted in 12th with four other challengers. 2006 NEC Individual Champion, senior Steve Foisy (Repentigny, Quebec/Academie Les Estacades) (Repentigny, Quebec/Academie Les Estacades) is currently locked in a nine-way tie at 22nd with sophomore supporter Mike Magalski (Spring Grove, Pa. / Spring Grove). Each player inked a +5, 77 in the order of (37-40) and (40-37). Second-year swinger Aaron Osysko (Parma, OH/Padua Franciscan) (Parma, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) discharged a +11, 83 to find himself in a four-way bottleneck at 45th.
Gowdy is one of eight NEC golfers to have an even par average on Hershey Links' par 3s. The red-hot senior is also listed in sixth place for an average score of a -1, 3.90 on all par 4s as well as dropping 12 total pars which ranks T-4th best. Amelia's four birdies currently ranks fourth best thus far alongside six other competitors. Overall, the Red Flash sunk the third most birdies with 14.
Saturday's day two presentation should make for an interesting round with just seven shots separating the top five teams. The Northeast Conference Championship's final round will be played on Sunday to determine the 2008 Northeast Conference victor.
