Red Flash Soccer Ties Duquesne 1-1 in Third Double-Overtime Game of the Season

LORETTO, Pa. (Sept. 7, 2008) – For the third time in three games, the Saint Francis women's soccer team ended 110 minutes of play in a tie, this time with the score being 1-1 against Duquesne on Sunday at the DeGol Soccer Complex.

Their three double overtime games ties last season's total overtime games.

The Red Flash, who have yet to lose a game, will travel to Hamilton, N.Y., to take on the Colgate Raiders at 7 p.m. on September 13 at Van Doren Field.

"We played really well against a tough Duquesne squad," said Saint Francis head coach Brenda van Stralen. "We just need to do a better job of finishing our chances, but I was happy with our effort."

Freshman midfielder Traci Flick (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) put the Red Flash up 1-0 four minutes into the first half. Defender Caitlin Vultaggio (Nashua, N.H./Lawrence Academy) (Nashua, N.H./Lawrence Academy) dribbled the ball up the left sideline and passed to junior midfielder Brittany Valentine (Hudson, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit/) (Hudson, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit). Valentine then made a pass into the box to Flick, who settled it with one touch and put into the lower right corner. Flick, who was the Brine/NEC Player-of-the-Week for the week of Sept. 1, now has four goals off of six shots this season.

The Dukes would catch up later in the first half. Shannon Renger's shot would be saved by Red flash goalkeeper Jessica Boyer (Pittsburgh, Pa/Mount Lebanon) (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon), but the rebound would find it's way to defender Annie Reid, who then put it in the left corner from two yards out.

Forward Brittni Grenninger (Chicora, Pa/Karns City ) (Chicora, Pa./Karns City) had come close to scoring three times in the second half, but couldn't find the back of the net. Alanna Vespa (Ancaster, Ontario/Saint Mary’s Catholic) (Ancaster, Ontario/Saint Mary's Catholic) made a wide open pass to Grenninger, whose shot from 17 yards out went wide left. Grenninger had another chance with 15 minutes left in the half, but her shot from 10 yards out was saved by Dukes goalkeeper Gabby Morrin. Her shot with 13:42 minutes left went wide.

Lauren Compton (Red Hill, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) (Red Hill, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) had a great chance to regain the lead in the second half off of a corner kick by Vespa, but her shot was saved by Morrin.

Duquesne also had a chance to take the lead with 2:32 left in the second half on a shot by Shaina Geisler, but Boyer made a great diving save to keep the game tied.

Flick, who had two breakaways in the regulation, had a great chance to end the game in the second overtime. Grenninger made a cross to Flick, but Flick's shot would be grabbed by Morrin who came out of the net to make the save.

The Red Flash are now unbeaten in their last six games, going 3-0-3 dating back to last season. This is the longest unbeaten streak in school history. The last time the Flash had an unbeaten streak was from Sept. 23, 2002, to Oct. 7, 2005, when they won five consecutive games. They are now 5-1-4 in their last five matches, dating back to Oct. 14, 2007.
