Red Flash Fall in Close Battle with Pioneers

LORETTO, Pa. (Oct.  12, 2009) – The Saint Francis men's soccer scored with less than two minutes remaining, but were still one goal short as they fell by a score of 2-1 in a close battle with the Sacred Heart Pioneers in Loretto on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Flash played a strong offensive first half, but didn't have anything to show for it on the scoreboard.  Sacred Heart's Nemanja Filimonovic got the Pioneers on the board first with a shot from ten yards that got past SFU goalkeeper Darius Motazed (North Vancouver, Canada/Sentinel Secondary) (North Vancouver, Canada/Sentinel Secondary).  The goal put SHU up 1-0 with eight minutes remaining in the half.

The Pioneers got on the board again halfway through the second half.  SHU's Giancarlo Massaro beat Motazed and sent to the ball over to Thomas Flanagan.  Flanagan then made a pass to Denis Brunotte, who put the ball in to make the score 2-0 in favor of the Pioneers.

Down 2-0, Saint Francis kept battling and kept the ball in front of the Pioneers' net.  With 1:54 remaining in the game, Wayne Tiller (Magnolia, Del./Caesar Rodney) Jr. (Magnulia, Del./Caesar Rodney) picked up a ball that deflected off of a player and put it past SHU's Alex Fait to put the Red Flash on the board.

However, Saint Francis couldn't find the back of the net again and took the 2-1 loss.

David Butler (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) had three of the Red Flash's 13 shots, while Kinglsey McLeod (Rocky Mount, N.C./Rocky Mount) and Daniel Moir (Christchurch, New Zealand/Shirley Boys) (Christchurch, New Zealand/Shirley Boys) each accounted for two.  Sacred Heart had nine shots, six of which came on goal.

Motazed make four stops in the game, while Fait came up with six saves.

Saint Francis will travel to New York for a game at St. Francis (NY) at 7 p.m. Friday evening.  They will remain in Brooklyn for a contest with Long Island on Sunday at 1 p.m.
