BROOKLYN,
N.Y. (
Oct. 12, 2009) –
Rachael Seibert (Murrysville, Pa/Franklin Regional)'s (
Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) seventh goal of the season led the Saint Francis women's soccer team past Long Island by a score of 1-0 on Sunday afternoon in Brooklyn, N.Y.
After scoring the first goal in SFU's come-from-behind win at Wagner on Friday, Seibert scored today's lone goal in the first half. The senior forward took a rebound and sent it past LIU goalkeeper Jennifer Bannon to put the Red Flash up 1-0 less than ten minutes into the game.
Though the Flash couldn't find the back of the net again, they didn't need to. SFU's Jessica Boyer (Pittsburgh, Pa/Mount Lebanon) (
Pittsburgh, Pa./
Mount Lebanon) made five stops for her 12th career shutout. The senior goalkeeper is now in a three-way tie for second place in school history in shutouts.
“They fought to win this game,” said Brenda van Stralen, head coach of the Red Flash. “We played our game and continued to fight. In the end, we got it done. I'm very proud of them. We just need to continue to fight out battles.”
Long Island out shot SFU 18-5. Seibert accounted for three of the Red Flash's shots, while Brianna Butcher (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow) (
East Longmeadow, Mass./East
Longmeadow) and Cailtin Vultaggio (Nashua, N.H/Lawrence Academy) (
Nashua, N.H./Lawrence Academy) each had a shot as well.
Saint Francis will travel to Mount St. Mary's for a 4 p.m. game on Friday afternoon. They will return home to host Monmouth on Sunday at 2 p.m.
