LORETTO, Pa. (Oct. 18, 2009) – Senior Brittany Valentine (Hudson, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit/) (Hudson, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) scored her fourth goal of the season, but the Saint Francis women's soccer team couldn't come from behind to take the win as they fell 4-1 to the Monmouth Hawks in a Northeast Conference match up on Sunday in Loretto.
Poor weather forced the game to be played at DeGol Field, but the change didn't bring good luck for the Red Flash. They were forced to play defense in their own end for much of the first half. Monmouth started the scoring off nine minutes in on a penalty kick from Ali Kliment to put the Hawks up 1-0.
Andrea Lopez stretched the lead to 2-0 after beating SFU goalkeeper Jessica Boyer (Pittsburgh, Pa/Mount Lebanon) (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon), who came out of the net to play the ball with 20 minutes remaining in the first half.
The Red Flash improved greatly in the second half, but still couldn't take the lead. Gianna Russo notched a goal off of a pass from BrieAnne Nomejko to put Monmouth up by three ten minutes into first half.
Valentine put SFU on the board with 17 minutes left to play in the game. Fellow senior Brittni Grenninger (Chicora, Pa/Karns City ) (Chicora, Pa./Kairns City) beat MU goalie Lia Fierro and sent the ball over to Valentine, who sent it into the empty net to make the score 3-1.
Mary Wilks secured the win for the Hawks three minutes later. Shannon Rogers sent a free kick over to Wilks, who sent the ball in to make the final score 4-1.
Monmouth out shot the Red Flash 21-4 in the game. Valentine had three of SFU's four shots. Boyer made seven saves in the game,
Prior to the start of the game, Saint Francis honored Grenninger, Valentine, Boyer and fellow seniors Alyssa Kersey (Clay, N.Y/Cicero-North Syracuse) (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) and Caitling Vultaggio (Nashua, N.H./Lawrence Academy) as part of the team's annual Senior Day celebration.
The Red Flash will remain in Loretto to host Bryant on Friday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
