NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (Oct. 2, 2009) – Junior goalkeeper Darius Motazed (North Vancouver, Canada/Sentinel Secondary) (North Vancouver, Canada / Sentinel Secondary) stopped 12 shots, but Central Connecticut State finally scored with 13 seconds remaining in regulation to steal a victory from the Saint Francis men's soccer team in a 1-1 double overtime tie in both teams' Northeast Conference openers on Friday afternoon.
Sophomore David Butler (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) (Baltimore, Md. / Blakefield) scored his second goal of the season off a deflection to put the Red Flash up 1-0 in the 18th minute. Motazed stopped 10 shots in regulation and two in overtime to help SFU move its record to 4-5-1 overall, and 0-0-1 in the NEC.
“I thought the guys battled hard,” said Saint Francis head coach Mike Casper. “Central Connecticut is a very good team, and we didn't play our best game. The encouraging thing is that we got a point on the road when we didn't play our best game. We'll take it, and prepare for another tough battle against Quinnipiac on Sunday.”
Jared Spieker scored CCSU's goal with 13 seconds remaining in regulation.
The Red Flash will take on Quinnipiac beginning at Noon on Sunday. It will be the final match of an eight-game road trip.
