Grenninger Nets Two as Red Flash Down Knights in NEC Action

LORETTO, Pa. (Oct. 2, 2009) – The Saint Francis women's soccer team improved to 2-0 in Northeast Conference action as Brittni Grenninger (Chicora, Pa/Karns City ) (Chicora, Pa./Kairns City) to lead the Red Flash past Fairleigh Dickinson 4-1 on Friday afternoon at the Stokes Soccer Complex.

The Red Flash are now 5-3-2 overall.  They will host Sacred Heart on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. in Loretto.

Brittany Valentine (Hudson, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit/) (Hudson, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) started the scoring off early for the Red Flash.  The senior captain netted her third goal of the season just four minutes into the game to put the Red Flash up 1-0.

Saint Francis continued to dominate the field for the rest of the half, forcing the Knights to play strong defense.  Though they had three more shots, none of them got past FDU goalkeeper Stephanie Tanzi.

The Red Flash continued to control the game, and in the second half it started to show on the scoreboard.  Six minutes into action, Traci Flick (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) head the ball past Tanzi, who had come out to play it.  Rachel Seibert (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) then sent the ball over to Grenninger, who sent it into the empty net for her first tally of the season.

Fairleigh Dickinson broke through the steady SFU defense 12 minutes into the second half.  Francesca Yaccarine took a shot, which was saved by Red Flash goalkeeper Jessica Boyer (Pittsburgh, Pa/Mount Lebanon) (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon).  Yaccarine then picked up her own rebound and sent it over to Christine Nevin, who tapped the ball into the left corner of the net.

With their lead cut to just one goal, SFU went on the offensive again.   Flick again made a beautiful pass over to Grenninger.  The senior forward then sent the ball past Tanzi with a sliding kick, scoring her second of the afternoon with 27 minutes to go.

Six minutes later, Seibert broke away from the defenders and took the ball up from midfield before kicking in it for her fourth goal of the season.   Seibert's tally gave the Red Flash the 4-1 win.

SFU out shot the Knights 11-8, with Seibert attempting four of those shots.  Valentine also had two.

Boyer made four saves, three of which came in the second half, for her fifth win of the season.

"What an effort they put forth," said head coach Brenda van Stralen.  "Everything that we have worked on since the preseason has finally come together.  I'm extremely happy with the way they played today."
