Red Flash Miss on Opportunities to Defeat Bryant at DeGol Field

LORETTO, Pa. (Oct. 30, 2009) – The Saint Francis men's soccer team held advantages in shots and corner kicks, but couldn't convert in a frustrating double overtime scoreless tie against Northeast Conference foe Bryant, on Friday afternoon, at DeGol Field.

The Red Flash had 16 shots and 10 against, and held a 14-5 edge in corner kicks. SFU had four corners in the second overtime.

Saint Francis moved its record to 6-10-2 on the season, and 2-5-2 in the Northeast Conference. The Red Flash will close out their season when they play host to Robert Morris at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 6.

SFU had several opportunities to score, but Bulldogs' goalkeeper Matt Miscione stopped five shots, including one outstanding save on a shot by junior midfielder Tyler Hibbs (St. Catherine, Canada/Governor Simcoe) (St. Catherine, Canada / Governor Simcoe). Hibbs touched a ball down the right sideline for Sophomore Kingsley McCleod (Rocky Mount, N.C. / Rocky Mount), who dribbled into the corner and sent a cross into the six-yard box. Hibbs placed a point-blank one-timer on goal, but Miscione came up with a tremendous save to keep the game scoreless early in the second half. Miscione was briefly shaken up on the play, but stayed in the game.

The Red Flash had a flurry of chances 10 minutes into the second half, including one by senior Daniel Moir (Christchurch, New Zealand/Shirley Boys) (Christchurch, New Zealand). Sophomore Parnell Hegngi (Silver Spring, MD/DeMatha Catholic) (Silver Spring, Md. / DeMatha Catholic) crossed a corner kick to the far post, and Moir got a leg on it. But his shot took one bounce and went high over the crossbar, with 35:24 remaining in regulation.

McCleod nearly struck about a minute later when Hegngi threw in to sophomore Taylor Powers (Petaluma, Calif./Casa Grande) (Petaluma, Calif. / Casa Grande). Powers fed McCleod, who took a hard shot from 35 yards out. He beat Miscione to his left, but the ball went just wide of the net.

Bryant's best opportunity of the game came in the second overtime on a shot from Matt Brown. Brown got behind the Red Flash defense and released a hard shot, but junior goalkeeper Darius Motazed (North Vancouver, Canada/Sentinel Secondary) (North Vancouver, Canada / Sentinel Secondary) made one of his three saves on the shot.

Both teams were whistled for 15 fouls in the contest. SFU had a 9-6 edge in shots in the second half.
