HAMDEN, Conn. (Oct. 4, 2009) – The Saint Francis men's soccer team held advantages in shots and corner kicks, but couldn't find the back of the net in a 3-0 loss at Quinnipiac on Sunday afternoon.
The Red Flash fell 4-6-1 overall, and 0-1-1 in NEC after concluding their eight-game road swing with a 3-4-1 mark. SFU will return home next weekend to play host to Fairleigh Dickinson and Sacred Heart on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
SFU outshot the Bobcats 22-13, and had a 4-1 edge in corner kicks, but Quinnipiac took a 1-0 lead in the first half before adding two insurance goals in the second half.
Junior goalkeeper Darius Motazed (North Vancouver, Canada/Sentinel Secondary) (North Vancouver, Canada / Sentinel Secondary) stopped six shots in the loss, while QU keeper Frederick Hall had 11 saves.
Sophomore Parnell Hegngi (Silver Spring, MD/DeMatha Catholic) (Silver Spring, Md. / DeMatha Catholic) led all Saint Francis players with five shots, including two on goal. Senior Daniel Moir (Christchurch, New Zealand/Shirley Boys) (Christchurch, New Zealand / Shirley Boys) and sophomore David Butler (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) (Baltimore, Md. / Loyola Catholic) had four shots each with Butler putting three on goal.
Three different players scored for Quinnipiac, which improved to 4-0-5 overall, and 1-0-1 in the Northeast Conference.
Dominic Adams got the scoring started with his first goal of the season in the 19th minute of play. Durval Pereira hit Dominic Adams with a pass off a free kick for a redirect past Motazed for a 1-0 Bobcats' lead.
Just five minutes into the second half, the Red Flash were called for a foul inside the 18-yard box, resulting in a penalty kick for Quinnipiac. Pierre Soubrier was able to place the penalty kick into the top left corner to make it 2-0.
Butler had a scoring chance in the 61st minute, but was denied by Hall. Butler had an open look at the goal and tried to go far right corner. Hall dove to his right and deflected the ball into the middle of the box where a Bobcat defender cleared it out of harm's way.
Philip Surprise made it 3-0 in the 66th minute with his second goal of the season, which came as a result of a long run through the SFU defense. Surprise moved up the right side of the field before cutting to the top of the 18-yard box. Using a defender as a screen, Surprise's shot slipped past Motazed and into the bottom left corner of the goal.
Hall preserved the shutout with a diving save on a penalty kick with six seconds remaining in the second half. Hegngi was awarded a kick after Quinnipiac was whistled for a foul inside the box. Hegngi tried to beat the Quinnipiac keeper with a shot to the lower left corner of the goal, but Hall was able to knock the ball away with his outstretched right hand.
