Red Flash Lose Late Lead, Game in NEC Match vs. Fairleigh Dickinson

LORETTO, Pa. (Oct. 9, 2009) – Fairleigh Dickinson's Dominic Reinold split the defense and hit the upper 90 in the third minute of overtime to spoil the return of the Saint Francis men's soccer team, 3-2, on Friday evening at the Stokes Soccer Field. The Red Flash had just returned from an eight-game road swing.

Reinold scored the game-tying and game-winning goals to help the Knights improve to 4-7 overall, and 1-2 in the Northeast Conference. The Red Flash got goals from freshman Seamus Ryder (Dunedin, New Zealand / Otago Boys) and sophomore David Butler (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) (Baltimore, Md. / Loyola Blakefield), but fell to 4-7-1 overall, and 0-2-1 in the Northeast Conference. SFU will try to snap a two-game skid when it plays host to Sacred Heart at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

FDU's game-winner came off a tremendous punt from goalkeeper Majdi Zaineh after SFU sophomore Sean O'Reilly (Front Royal,Va./Seton) (Front Royal, Va. / Seton) missed on a hard shot just high from 28 yards out. Zaineh punted across midfield, where Fernando Huthmacher tapped a pass toward the 18-yard box. Reinold split the defense and fired a shot that went over the head of Saint Francis goalkeeper Darius Motazed (North Vancouver, Canada/Sentinel Secondary) (North Vancouver, Canada / Sentinel Secondary) at 93 minutes, 47 seconds.

Leslie Ayafor got the scoring started in the 17th minute when he found the open net off a scramble in front. Paul King tapped a pass to him at the left post, where Ayafor put it away for a 1-0 FDU lead.

However, Butler had a strong game for Saint Francis, and sent a beautiful cross into the 18-yard box, where he found Ryder for his first career goal, at 37:37, to pull the Red Flash into a 1-1 tie.

Butler gave Saint Francis a 2-1 at 62:01 off a scramble in front of the net. SFU attempted two shots that were blocked, but Butler found the ball at his feet, made a move, and slammed it into upper left corner from 10 yards out.

But King again found an open teammate, Reinold, on a cross for a goal from 12 yards out just over two minutes later. Reinold's first goal tied it at 2-2 at 64:44.

Motazed stopped eight shots in the game, while Butler and junior Patrick Fleming (Dunedin, New Zealand/Bayfield) (Dunedin, New Zealand / Bayfield) had two shots each. FDU held a 20-10 advantage in shots, while Saint Francis had a 10-5 edge in corner kicks. The Knights were whistled seven times for being offside, while the Red Flash were caught three times.
