EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 22, 2009) – Despite having a two goal lead in the first seven minutes of the game, the Saint Francis lacrosse team's offense stalled as they dropped a decision to Northeast Conference rival Mount St. Mary's.
The Red Flash now fall to 1-4 on the season and 0-2 in the NEC.
The Mount got on the scoreboard first with a goal by Emily Kirby less than one minute into play.
After Katie Jenkins (got controlled the draw following the Mountaineers' goal, Meghan Crosby (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) scored on a free-position shot to tie the game at 1-1 with 29:13 left to play.
Soon after, Meg Lamarche (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) scored on another free position to put the Red Flash ahead 2-1.
Katie Jenkins (Rochester, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) scored her second goal of the season unassisted with 25:04 left to play in the first half, to Saint Francis up 3-1.
Mount St. Mary's came back to put in another on a free-position shot by Breana Waraksa.
Crosby scooped up a crucial ground ball that led the Chelsea Kent's (Winter Springs, Fla./Winter Springs) team leading 14th goal of the season with 23:37 remaining in the first half, giving the Red Flash a two goal advantage.
Waraksa kept the Mount close, scoring her second goal of the game a minute later to put the score at 4-3 in favor of the Red Flash. Teammate Ashley Johnson tied the game on a successful free-position shot ten minute into the first half.
Katelyn Catanese scored thirty seconds later on a pass from Waraksa to give the Mountaineers their second lead of the day.
Lucy Pompa and Waraksa scored to put Mount St. Mary's up by three with 17:19 left to play in the first.
Kate Simmons (Delran, N.J./Delran) got Saint Francis back in the game, netting her 10th goal of the season with 8:21 remaining the first half, but Johnson scored twice more for the Mount to put the score at 9-5 with a little under five minute remaining in the first half. Pompa scored her second of the game soon after on a feed from Kirby, allowing the Mountaineers to take a 10-5 lead into the locker room with them for half time.
Mount St. Mary's scored first in the second half on a goal from Kathleen Rossetti just 90 seconds into play, and got another when Nicole Price put one past Danielle Pokusa (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) to put the score at 12-5.
The Red Flash gave up three more and found themselves in ten point hole less than four minutes into the second half.
Simmons again kept Saint Francis in the mix with her second goal of the game with 23:50 left to play. The comeback was short lived as Catanese put in her third of the game for the Mountaineers on a free-position shot, putting the Mount up by 10 once again.
Pokusa made a sprawling save on a free-position attempt by Catanese with 19 minutes left to play, but let a goal by Pompa in less than two minutes later. The Mountaineers put two more on net soon after, taking a commanding 19-6 lead.
Jenna Griffiths (Loveland, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) scored her first career goal on a free-position shot with 5:20 remaining in the game.
The Mountaineers put two more on net before Simmons tallied her 11th goal of the year with 28 seconds left in the game. The Mount then scored on a goal by Kim Karpinski ten seconds later to end the game with a 22-8 lead.
The Red Flash had 17 ground balls to the Mount's 33, and were out shot 46-13.
Pokusa had 15 saves for Saint Francis.
The Red Flash are back in action on Sunday when they host Wagner at DeGol Field in an 11 a.m. Northeast Conference match up.
