Red Flash Lose Power, Fall to Wagner 16-11

LORETTO, Pa. (March 29, 2009)Kate Simmons (Delran, N.J./Delran) and Katie Jenkins (Rochester, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) netted three goals apiece, but the Saint Francis lacrosse team didn't have the power to pull out a win and fell to Northeast Conference foe Wagner 16-11 at DeGol Field in Loretto on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Flash fall to 0-3 in the conference and 1-5 overall. They return to action on April 3 when they will travel to Long Island for a 4 p.m. match up with the Blackbirds.

Wagner controlled the draw to start the game, but Sheri Fort (Sicklerville, N.J./Washington Township) caused a turnover that led to Brittany Kovac's (Oshawa, Ontario/R.S. McLaughlin CVI) sixth goal of the season 35 seconds in.

The Seahawks struck back with a goal of their own, but the Red Flash were able to regain their lead when Chelsea Kent (Winter Springs, Pa./Winter Springs) sent a pass over to Jenkins, who tallied her first of the day.

A clear attempt by Wagner failed when Katie Dacanay (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) grabbed a ground ball. Fort threw the ball over to Jenna Griffiths (Loveland, Ohio/Ursuline Academy), sent it past Seahawks goalkeeper Alex Johnston to put the score at 3-1. Simmons made it 4-1 less than a minute later with an assist from Griffiths.

Wagner scored one more, but Kent knocked in her 15th of the season four minutes later to keep the Red Flash ahead. The Seahawks then regained the lead with four goals in four minutes. Simmons tied the game on a free-position shot, but Lauren Petrick scored for Wagner, putting them up 7-6 at halftime.

Meg Lamarche (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) and Jenkins each netted a goal to take back the lead eight minutes into the first half. The Seahawks' offense found another bust of power, tallying three more goals to take a lead they would never surrender.

Jenkins netted her third of the game on another free position shot, but Wagner struck back with two more to put the score at 12-9. Simmons then scored her third of the game with 11:04 remaining. Again the Seahawks came back with four tallies.

Griffiths gave the Red Flash one more on a feed from Lamarche to end the game at 16-11.

Jenkins and Dacanay each picked up three of SFU's 18 ground balls, and the Red Flash caused nine turnovers.

Wagner out shot Saint Francis 36-28. The Seahawks ended the afternoon with 20 ground balls.

Danielle Pokusa (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) had nine saves for the Red Flash.
