LORETTO, Pa. (April 17, 2009) – Freshman Chelsea Kent (Winter Springs, Fla./Winter Springs) tallied five goals and assisted on another, but the effort fell short as the Saint Francis lacrosse team fell to the Colonials of Robert Morris 23-9 on Friday night at DeGol Field in Loretto.
The Red Flash return to action on Sunday with an 11 a.m. match-up against Manhattan at DeGol Field. Prior to the game, which will be their last of the season, the Flash will honor seniors Corrine Smeak (Frederick, Md./St. John's) and Meghan Crosby (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) as part of their annual Senior Day celebration.
Robert Morris started off a 9-0 scoring run just 15 seconds into action. Kent netted an unassisted goal to finally put the Red Flash on the board with 20:12 remaining in the first half.
The Colonials tallied two more before Kent sent a pass over to Kate Simmons (Delran, N.J./Delran), who found the back of the net to put the score at 11-2. Kent then scored again off a feed from Brittany Kovacs (Oshawa, Ontario/R.S. McLaughlin CVI). RMU notched another before Kovacs turned around and scored one of her own to make it 12-4 with 7:44 left before halftime.
Jenna Griffiths (Loveland, Ohio/Ursuline) scored less than a minute later off a pass from Katie Jenkins (Rochester, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) before the Colonials went on a 3-0 scoring run to end the half with the score at 15-5.
Kent tallied her third of the game less than thirty seconds into the first half, cutting the deficit to just nine. Robert Morris scored four more times before Kent ended their run with a goal nine minutes into the half. The Colonials netted two more, and Kent and Catherine Helming (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy). RMU tallied one more to end the game at 23-9 in favor of the Colonials.
Kent led the team with 11 shots, nine of which came on goal. The team had a total of 23 shots and 31 ground balls in the game. Simmons and Helming combined for eight of the team's 17 draw controls. Simmons also caused two turnovers.
Danielle Pokusa (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) had seven saves and two ground balls.
Emily Tomlinson led the Colonials with four goals and eight draw controls. RMU had 35 shots and 37 ground balls. Erica Webb and Jennifer Shulze combined for nine saves.
