Field hockey earns first-ever win over Sacred Heart

Playing its second-to-last home game of the season, the Saint Francis University field hockey team finally gave the fans at DeGol Field a reason to smile – and in historic fashion, no less.

The Red Flash celebrated Senior Day with a, 3-1, win over Northeast Conference foe Sacred Heart.  The win was not only SFU's first home victory of the season, but also marked the first time the Flash have defeated the Pioneers in 11 tries.

Saint Francis, by improving to 4-12 on the season, also tied the program mark for wins in a season set back in 2007.

SFU's historic performance, however, was in doubt for much of the afternoon.  The Red Flash trailed 1-0 at the intermission after being outshot 6-to-5 in the opening half.

The second half was a different story.

Freshman Jocelyn Scillia (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) put Saint Francis on the board in the 48th minute on a goal resulting from a corner play.  The tally was Scillia's four of the season and her second in three games.

Less than two minutes later, Claire Wilkie (Durban, South Africa/Danville Park Girls) (Durban, South Africa/Danville Park Girls') netted the eventual game-winner.

The SFU offense wasn't done, though, as sophomore Tia Dudukovich (Port Matilda, Pa./State College Area) (Port Matilda, Pa./State College Area) notched her fourth goal of the season at the 62:15 to put the game out of reach for Sacred Heart.  Senior Julia Baczeski (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug) (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug) assisted on the score.

Saint Francis out-fired the Pioneers 3-to-10 in the second half.  SFU's 15 shots in a game tied a season-high set at Siena on Oct. 17.

Red Flash goalkeeper Katelyn Vitali (Churchville, Md./C. Milton Wright) made five stops while earning the win.

Saint Francis returns to action on Friday when it welcomes Robert Morris for its home finale.  The game will get underway at 3:30 p.m.
