WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. (Oct. 10, 2008) – Sophomore Tyler Hibbs (St. Catherine, Canada/Governor Simcoe) (St. Catherine, Canada / Governor Simcoe) scored his first goal of the season as regulation was winding down, but Monmouth's Ryan Kinne scored in the second overtime session to hand the Saint Francis men's soccer team a tough 2-1 double overtime loss on Friday in both teams' Northeast Conference openers.
Max Hamilton gave the Hawks a 1-0 lead in the 63rd minute, but Hibbs knocked his second career goal in the upper 90 with 30 seconds remaining to force overtime. Freshman Kingsley McLeod (Rocky Mount, N.C. / Rocky Mount) had a good chance at a game-winner with eight seconds remaining in regulation, but Monmouth goalkeeper Bryan Meredith stopped the shot.
Both teams took nine shots in the game, while SFU held an 8-7 edge in corner kicks.
The Red Flash, who had a three-game winning streak snapped, dropped to 3-6-1 overall on the season, and 0-1 in the NEC. They will try to get back on the winning track with a 1 p.m. tilt at Mount St. Mary's on Sunday.
