LORETTO, Pa. (Oct. 8, 2010) –
The Saint Francis men's soccer team rallied for two goals in the final three minutes to turn an impending loss into a thrilling 4-3 victory over Quinnipiac on Friday afternoon in Northeast Conference play at the Stokes Soccer Complex.
Senior
Benjamin Kujawa (Jarrettsville, Md./North Hartford) (Jarrettsville, Md. / North Harford) scored the tying goal with 2 minutes, 56 seconds remaining before sophomore
Wayne Tiller (Magnolia, Del./Caesar Rodney) (Magnolia, Del. / Caesar Rodney) scored the game-winner off an athletic play with just nine seconds remaining.
Tiller received a pass from senior
Patrick Fleming (Dunedin, New Zealand/Bayfield) (Dunedin, New Zealand / Bayfield), and released a floater with his back to the goal. The shot went over the head of goalkeeper Josh Lavallee, hit the crossbar, and fell straight down into the goal.
It was Tiller's fourth goal of the season, and second game-winner.
The Red Flash improved to 6-3 overall, and 2-0 in the Northeast Conference. The 6-3 mark after nine games is the best in school history. They will return to action at 1 p.m. Sunday when Central Connecticut State visits the Stokes Soccer Complex.
“Today was a strange game,” said Saint Francis head coach
Michael Casper. “We didn't play our best soccer, and still found a way to win. I give credit to our guys for playing until the end and bringing the game back, but we know we have to improve to be ready for Sunday.”
Fleming, who entered the week among the Northeast Conference and national leaders in scoring, contributed a goal and two assists. He now has six goals, seven assists and 19 points the season. His seven assists tie him for third on the school's single-season list. He now has 13 career helpers to move him past Gary Burke (2001-04) and Chuck Chupien (1986-89) into fourth on the school's list.
Junior
Kingsley McLeod (Rocky Mount, N.C./Rocky Mount) (Rocky Mount, N.C. / Rocky Mount) had a highlight reel goal from 40 yards out, and added an assist.
Fleming opened the scoring with a similar tally to the goal he scored nine days ago at No. 24 Penn State. He was awarded a free kick from 30 yards out and nailed it into the upper left corner to give SFU a 1-0 lead at 28:21.
However, the Bobcats would score the equalizer just under five minutes later when Philip Suprise got behind the Saint Francis defense to make it 1-1 at 33:19.
The teams went into halftime deadlocked at 1-1. Quinnipiac had a slight 11-9 edge in shots at the break.
McLeod opened the second half scoring with a rocket from 40 yards out. Fleming fed him a pass up the right side, and McLeod released a hard shot that found the upper right corner to make it 2-1 at 52:09.
But Quinnipiac again tied it up when Dwayne Mars got behind the defense and shot from left to right to make it 2-2 at 68:51. Mars scored his second goal of the game off a scramble in front to give the Bobcats their only lead of the game, 3-2, at 79:35.
With the game winding down, the Red Flash began to apply pressure. Fleming had another free kick from about 30 yards out that sailed just high of the goal.
But Kujawa would make his only offensive opportunity of the game count when McLeod hit him with a nice touch pass at the top of the 18-yard box. Kujawa nailed his first goal of the year into the lower right corner to tie the match at 3-3 with 2:56 remaining in regulation.
Quinnipiac goalkeeper Lavallee had a goal kick with 33 seconds remaining that was stolen by Saint Francis at midfield. The Red Flash worked up the right side with time winding down. Fleming hit Tiller with a bouncing pass at the top of the box, and Tiller fought off a defender to release his shot that hit the crossbar and fell into the goal with just nine seconds left.
