EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 26, 2010) – A four-goal effort from sophomore midfielder
Kate Simmons (Delran, N.J./Delran) (Delran, N.J./Delran) wasn't enough as the Saint Francis lacrosse team suffered their first Northeast Conference loss as they fell to Mount St. Mary's 14-8 in Emmitsburg, Md., on Friday evening.
The Red Flash, who are now 6-5 overall, move to 2-1 in the conference. They will continue on to Monmouth for a match up on Sunday afternoon.
Simmons netted her first goal of the evening less than a minute in off of a feed from freshman Danielle Conwell (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) to give the Flash a 1-0 lead. The Mount scored the next six goals before Simmons tallied her second of the game, this time sending a pass from
Brittany Kovacs (Oshawa, Ontario/R.S. McLaughlin) (Oshawa, Ontario/R.S. McLaughlin CVI) into the net with eight minutes to play in the first half.
Alli Fife tapped in a goal for the Mount before Simmons,
Catherine Helming (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy) and
Pariss Townsend-Griffin (Silver Spring, Md./Elizabeth Seton) (Silver Spring, Md./Elizabeth Seton) each notched a goal for the Flash to cut the SFU deficit to just two. Helming then added another with eight seconds left, converting on a free position shot to bring SFU within one at halftime.
The Mount started the scoring off with four consecutive goals to stretch the advantage to 11-6 before Simmons racked up an unassisted goal, her fourth of the day, with 12 minutes to go in the game. Emily Kirby netted two straight for the Mount before Stephanie Toomey (East Rochester, N.Y./East Rochester) added in a tally with seven minutes left. MSM's Ashley Johnson netted the last goal of the game as the Mount took the 14-8 victory.
Simmons, who had eight shots, also led the way with seven draw controls and a caused turnover. Townsend-Griffin, Conwell and
Danielle Pokusa (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) each grabbed three ground balls for the Flash, who picked up 17 total.
Pokusa made 10 saves on the day, as did her counterpart Brigid McTavish.
Kirby led the Mount with five goals, while Esther Rufolo grabbed three draws.
