Red Flash Stage Comeback to Defeat Purple Eagles 13-10

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (March 9, 2010) – Down 8-3 at the half, Kate Simmons (Delran, N.J./Delran) (Delran, N.J./Delran) and Stephanie Toomey (East Rochester, N.Y./East Rochester) combined for five consecutive goals as part of a massive comeback that led the Saint Francis women's lacrosse team past the Niagara Purple Eagles 13-10 on Tuesday afternoon at Bigler Field on the campus of Penn State.

The game had originally been scheduled for February 19, but was postponed due to weather.  With the win, the Red Flash move to 3-2 in the season.

Toomey started the scoring off by sending in a pass from Danielle Conwell (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) a minute and a half into action to put the Red Flash up 1-0.  The Purple Eagles scored the next two goals, taking a 2-1 lead before Katie Jenkins (Rochester, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) (Rochester, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) fed Catherine Helming (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy) netted a goal to tie the game at 2-2 with 22:09 remaining in the first half.

Emily French sent one past Danielle Pokusa (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) to put Niagara up again by one before Toomey netted her second of the game off of a pass from Brittany Kovacs (Oshawa, Ontario/R.S. McLaughlin) (Oshawa, Ontario/R.S. McLaughlin CVI) to tie the game at 3-3 just three minutes later.

The Purple Eagles scored seven straight goals, taking an 8-3 lead just thirty seconds prior to the end of the first half.

Five minutes into the second half, Simmons took the ball through the crease and sent it in before adding her second of the game a few minutes later off of a pass from Kovacs to cut the deficit to three goals.  Seven minutes later, Toomey knocked in an unassisted goal to bring the Red Flash within two.

Simmons then took it upon herself to tie the game by converting on two free-position shots, the latter coming with 8:48 left.  Emily French scored the Purple Eagles' first goal of the second half with 5:28 remaining, giving Niagara a slim 9-8 lead.

Toomey converted on a free-position shot less than a minute later to tie the game once again at 9-9.  Simmons then sent a pass over to Conwell, who scored her first of the game to put SFU up 10-9 with 4:02 remaining.

Helming added in another, as did Simmons give the Flash the 12-9 lead with just over a minute to go.  Courtney Formato put up a last ditch effort for the Eagles with 24 seconds left, but was countered by Helming's last second goal as the Red Flash took the 13-10 win.

Both team finished with 32 total shots and 21 shots on goal.  Conwell led the way with eight for the Red Flash, followed closely by Simmons and Toomey, who each had seven.

Formato had seven scoring attempts for Niagara.

Katie Dacanay (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) had 11 ground balls for the Red Flash, who totaled 38 as a team on the day.  Dacanay also led Saint Francis with three caused turnovers.

SFU will travel to New York to play Lemoyne College on March 14 in a noon game.
