Flash shutout by Bobcats at NECs

SOUTH WINDSOR, N.J. (April 16, 2010) – Despite hard fought battles, both the Saint Francis men's and women's tennis teams were shut out by the Quinnipiac Bobcats in the Quarterfinals of the Northeast Conference Championships. The men were dropped by the Bobcats 6-0, while the women were also shut out by Quinnipiac at 5-0.

For the men, Elahn Pogue (St. Catherines, Ont./West Park Secondary) fell to Brian Mikkelson at No. 1 singles by a score of 6-4, 1-2. Nathaniel Fleming (Gas City, INd./Mississinewa) took a 6-1, 6-0 loss to John Hughes in the No. 2 slot, with Stephen Kowalski (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East) (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) dropping a 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 3 flight.

Stephen Child (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster County Day) was shut out at No. 4 singles 6-0, 6-0, while Andres Rosa (Carolina, Puerto Rico/Colegio la Piedad) (Carolina, PR/Colegio la Piedad) put up a fight at No. 5 singles, eventually falling 6-1, 4-1 in an unfinished match. Peter Dietrich (Halifax, Nova Scotia/Citadel) (Halifax, NS/Citadel) lost to Alex Lazerowich at the No. 6 spot, falling 6-3, 3-0 in another unfinished match to round out the singles action.

Pogue and Fleming took a few points but fell 8-4 overall to Mikkelson and James Kwei in the top doubles flight. Child and Kowalski fell at No. 2 doubles to Weeden and Hughes, 7-4, though their match was unfinished. Rosa and Dietrich dropped an 8-3 decision in the No. 3 doubles slot.

In the top women's spot, SFU Samantha Fulchiero (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) fell 6-0, 6-1 to QU's Mary Wilson. Stephanie Rivera (El Paso, Texas/America's High School) (El Paso, Texas/America's HS) dropped 6-1,1-2 unfinished decision at No. 2 to Rachel Cantor. Abigail Ball (Ebensburg, Pa./Central Cambria) (Ebensburg, Pa./Central Cambria) fell 6-0, 6-1 in No. 3 singles to Adrienne Markison.

Devyn Sarver (Mt. Clemens, Mich./Fraser) was swept 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 by Sarah Viebrrock, while Caitlin Bart (Warren, Ohio/Howland) (Warren, Ohio/Howland) took a 6-0, 6-0 loss in the No. 5 spot to Natalie Duckor. In the final spot, Laura Husband (Dawson, Pa./Connellsville Area) (Dawson, Pa./Connellsville Area) was defeated by Lisanne Steinhart 6-1, 4-0.

In doubles action, Markison and Mary Wilson defeated Fulchiero and Juliana Gustafson (Keyser, W.Va./Keyser) (Keyser, W. Va./Keyser) at the No. 1 spot by a score of 8-0. Sarver and Rivera lost a hard fought battle to Cantor and Viebrock in the No. 2 flight by a score of 8-3. Ball and partner Brianna Mapes (Somerset, Pa./Shanksville) (Somerset, Pa./Shanksville) fell 5-4 in an unfinished match to Natalie Duckor and Shawna Sarson.

Both teams will play in the consolation final tomorrow, with the women facing Monmouth and the men taking on St. Francis NY.
