LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (Sept. 17, 2010) – The Saint Francis University field hockey team earned its second win of the season on Friday evening, holding off Appalachian State, 4-3, at Lock Haven’s Charlotte E. Smith Field.
On the strength of some particularly solid play by their forwards, the Red Flash tallied their second-highest goal total in program history to down the resilient Mountaineers. Saint Francis took a, 2-0, lead into the intermission thanks to a pair of scores by sophomore
Kellie Mason (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich) (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich).
With the feat, Mason became just the second player in school history to post multiple multi-goal games in her career.
In the second half, Appalachian State came roaring back, scoring the game’s next two goals to tie things up in the 56th minute on Caitlin Counts’ second marker of the season.
The Red Flash, however, were quick to regain momentum.
Just two minutes later, senior
Rebecca Reiff (Farmingdale, N.J./Wall) (Farmingdale, N.J./Wall) gave Saint Francis the lead for good. Sophomore
Tia Dudukovich (Port Matilda, Pa./State College Area) (Port Matilda, Pa./State College Area) lit the lamp in the 63rd minute, in what would stand as the eventual game-winner.
The Mountaineers scored once more at the 65:08 mark, but could come no closer as the Red Flash held on for the victory.
In all, SFU fired 12 shots, 11 of which were on goal, while Appalachian State pulled the trigger on 10 shots. Mason led the way with five shots.
Saint Francis goalkeeper Katelyn Vitali (Churchville, Md./C. Milton Wright) earned the decision with a three-save outing.
SFU returns to action on Sunday when it welcomes Colgate for a noon contest.
