Late Goals Send Red Flash To Defeat in Exhibition With Marist

LORETTO, Pa. (July 22, 2010) – Saint Francis dominated large stretches, but gave up two late goals in a disappointing 2-1 men's soccer exhibition loss versus Marist on Sunday afternoon at the Stokes Soccer Complex.

In a contest that featured two rare penalty kicks, the Red Foxes overcame being out-shot 17-8. Sophomore SFU goalkeeper Daniel Valcicak (Herndon, Va./Gonzaga College) (Herndon, Va. / Gonzaga College) stopped four shots. Joe Ruocco, who played the first 75 minutes for Marist, collected three saves, and Nick Gent stopped three shots staving off a furious Red Flash attack in the final five minutes.

“We played very well for stretches, but we need to do it for 90 minutes and beyond,” said Saint Francis head coach Michael Casper. “This is a good game to build off of as we know where some of our weaknesses are. Our guys understand that, and I expect them to work hard during training this week.”

Senior Patrick Fleming (Dunedin, New Zealand/Bayfield) (Dunedin, New Zealand / Bayfield), who concluded a strong summer playing in his native land, gave Saint Francis a 1-0 lead on a penalty kick at 34 minutes, 2 seconds.

However, Anthony Rozmus sent a terrific ball into the 18-yard box, where Rob Bronski headed it in for Marist's first goal off a corner kick at 75:35.

Joe Touloumis scored the game-winner off another penalty kick at 82:12, putting the ball into the lower right corner of the goal.

SFU made a late charge, peppering the Red Foxes' goalkeepers with several good shots in the closing minutes.

With just under five minutes to go, Fleming took a free kick from 25 yards out. The ball made its way through the wall, but Touloumis made the easy save.

Freshman Nick Kolarec (Pittsburgh, Pa. West Allegheny) nearly recorded his first career point with just under five minutes remaining when he sent a great pass into the six-yard box. He connected with senior Sean O'Reilly (Front Royal,Va./Seton) (Front Royal, Va. / Seton), but the shot went just wide. A short while later, Gent came out to the top of the 18-yard box to challenge a Fleming shot, and knocked it away harmlessly.

Tiller came in all alone with 90 seconds to go, and Gent made another point blank save that secured the 2-1 victory for Marist.

SFU held a 17-8 advantage in shots, while the Red Foxes held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks. The Red Flash were whistled for 10 fouls, while Marist was called for nine.
