Men's soccer postseason hopes kept alive with shutout win

Box Score

LORETTO, Pa. (Oct. 23, 2011)
– The Saint Francis University men's soccer team kept its postseason hopes alive Sunday afternoon at DeGol Field by downing Bryant by the final of 3-0.

The Red Flash (8-6-1, 4-3) tallied its first goal, the eventual game winner, off the foot of sophomore Tobi Iguade (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) at the 21:55 mark of the first half. Iguade knocked in a rebound past Bryant (2-11-1, 1-7) starting goalkeeper George Spanos, to put the Flash up by one. Classmate Nick Kolarac (Pittsburgh, Pa./West Allegheny) was credited with an assist on the goal. The goal is Iguade's second of the season and first since the home opener against Pittsburgh Aug. 29.

Saint Francis dominated the first half of play, outshooting the Bulldogs by an 8-2 margin and holding a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks, but lead by just the one goal heading into the half.

In the 65th minute, the Flash again scored off a rebound, this time from junior Makala Hairston (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall College) who picked up his second goal of the year. Wayne Tiller (Magnolia, Del./Caesar Rodney) connected on a pass to David Butler (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) who put up a shot that bounced off of the Bulldogs' keeper to a waiting Hairston who placed his shot into the back of the net and gave the Flash a two goal lead.

For some insurance six minutes later, Butler took a feed in front of the net from Tiller and David Trunzo (State College, Pa./State College) and fired a shot past the Bryant keeper for his second marker of the season. Similar to Iguade, the third goal of the game for Saint Francis is Butler's first goal since the matchup with Pittsburgh. The assist for Trunzo gives him the first collegiate point of his career.

“This is a big three points as Bryant is a difficult team to play against,” head coach Michael Casper said. “I thought we were able to control the tempo, limit their opportunities and take advantage of the chances we created.  I am very happy for Tobi and Makala as they have been working really hard and it is nice for them to be rewarded with a goal.  It is also great to see David score as he does so much for our team. I am pleased with the performance of the whole group but we know we have a long way to go and an important weekend upcoming.”

In all, Saint Francis outshot the Bulldogs 16-6 in the contest and managed 10 corner kicks to Bryant's three. SFU forced Bryant's goalkeeper to make five saves on the day, while Flash starting keeper Darius Motazed (North Vancouver, Canada/Sentinel Secondary) made four stops on the afternoon to pick up his seventh shutout win of the season.

Saint Francis hits the road once more in the regular season when they travel to Emmitsburg, Md. to take on Mount St. Mary's this Friday at 7 p.m.
