BOX SCORE
LORETTO, Pa. (Oct. 23, 2011) – Playing in front of the home crowd for the final time this regular season, defender
Jennifer Brennan (Northport, N.Y./Northport) scored the first goal of her collegiate career – the eventual game-winner – in the Saint Francis University women's soccer team's 3-0 win over Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday.
The 43rd-minute goal, which Brennan tipped in from 10 yards out, not only kept the Red Flash (11-5-1; 7-0-1 NEC) in the driver's seat to host the 2011 Northeast Conference Championship, but it occurred in her last regular-season home game. The junior will leave the team after the season to wrap up her degree in SFU's prestigious Physical Therapy program.
The defense of which Brennan is a member also played a significant role in carrying the day, blanking its third straight opponent and registering its eighth shutout of the season. Red Flash goalkeeper
Brianna Butcher (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow) made four stops on the afternoon as Saint Francis outshot the Knights (4-11-1; 1-8 NEC) to the tune of 19 to six.
Tesa McKibben (Cogan Station, Pa./Montoursville) scored the second Flash goal of the day by taking a feed from
Beatriz Maros de Carvalho (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Sagrado Coraco de Jesus) and lifting the ball to the right of the keeper from 15 yards out. The 58th-minute tally was her 12th of the season.
Freshman
Mackenzie Walter (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) notched her third goal of the season in the 86th minute on a rebound in front of the net.
Ellie Gavin (Hilliard, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) and
Aryn Askin (Scottdale, Pa./Southmoreland) were credited with assists.
Fairleigh Dickinson's Rashidah Sherman fired four of her team's six shots. Knights' keeper Stephanie Tanzi made six saves in the complete-game effort.
With a chance to tie the Northeast Conference record for wins in a season, Saint Francis will close out its regular season with a two-game road trip to New York next weekend. The Flash visit Long Island on Friday followed by a trip to Wagner on Sunday.
