BROOKLYN, N.Y. (Oct. 28, 2011) – The Long Island Blackbirds struck twice in each half to down Saint Francis University, 4-1, in Northeast Conference women's soccer action Friday at LIU Field. The win halted SFU's five-game winning streak as it fell to 11-6-1 and 7-1-1 in league play.
The Blackbirds won its sixth straight to improve to 10-7 and 7-2 in the NEC. Saint Francis still holds the top spot in the conference standings with 22 points – one point better than LIU. The Flash need a win or tie on Sunday at Wagner to clinch home field advantage in the upcoming NEC postseason.
LIU's Kayleigh Morgan posted the game's first goal in the 21st minute on a ball dropped off by Ruby Leon 10 yards in front of the goal. The Blackbirds added their second score via an own goal in the 30th minute in the aftermath of a corner play.
McKibben spoiled a potential Long Island shutout at the less than five minutes into the second half, taking a pass in stride from midfielder
Traci Flick (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) and pulling the trigger from nearly 30 yards out.
The score was the first given up by the Blackbirds' defense in over 360 minutes of play.
LIU was quick to regain its two-goal edge, however, with a score by 59 seconds later by Ariana Calderon and Sydney Ciufo made it a 4-1 game five minutes later in the 56th.
The victory was Long Island's second over the Flash in six meetings since 2007 and its first since 2008.
Shots were even at 8-to-8 on the evening.
Sunday's kickoff at Wagner is slated for 1 p.m.
