EMMITSBURG, Md. (Oct. 28, 2011) – The Saint Francis University men's soccer team battled Mount St. Mary's to a 0-0 tie Friday night, which keeps their chances of a Northeast Conference postseason spot alive. The shutout is the ninth of the season for the Red Flash and sets a new school record.
“I am pleased with the shutout and the way we competed today,” head coach
Michael Casper said. “We battled a tough team and took a point on the road. We know we have to do a better job of finishing our chances but we are excited about the prospect of coming home and playing Monmouth on Sunday with our backs against the wall. We will rest and recover tomorrow and be ready for Sunday.”
The Red Flash (8-6-2, 4-3-1) and the Mountaineers (7-6-2, 4-3-1) put up a strong defensive battle in the first half of action as neither team yielded a goal. SFU managed to get three shots away in the first half, while the Mount tallied five.
In the second half, the defense took center stage once more as the Flash recorded just two shots and the Mountaineers managed three. With none of those shots converted into goals, the game headed into a first overtime.
Through two overtime periods, the Flash outshot the Mount 5-2 but neither squad could get on the score sheet.
Senior
Darius Motazed (North Vancouver, Canada/Sentinel Secondary) played all 110 minutes and stopped three Mountaineer shots. Three SFU players recorded two
shots each throughout the contest,
David Butler (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield),
Makala Hairston (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall College) and
Nick Kolarac (Pittsburgh, Pa./West Allegheny).
In all, the Red Flash and the Mount both compiled 10 shots but Saint Francis held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
With its ninth shutout of the season, the Red Flash are ranked 13
th nationally in shutout percentage, are 12
th in save percentage and 24
th in goals against average.
Saint Francis returns home for its final two regular season games, beginning with first place Monmouth this Sunday, tentatively scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Stokes Soccerplex, but time and location could change due to weather.
