Men's soccer closes 2011 season with shutout win over RMU

Motazed sets single season record for shutouts

Box Score

LORETTO, Pa. (Nov. 6, 2011)
– Playing in its last game of the 2011 season, the Saint Francis University men's soccer team went out in style by defeating in-state and conference rival Robert Morris 1-0 in overtime Sunday evening at DeGol Field.

“I thought our guys showed a tremendous amount of character today,” head coach Michael Casper said.  “Knowing the other results going into the game and that we weren't going to make the playoffs can be brutal and can kill a team, however our boys were able to pick themselves up, and respond to the adversity with a good performance. I thought we were much better in the second half and overtime and put a lot of pressure on them and deserved the win.”

On senior day, with 41 seconds remaining in the first overtime period, senior Kingsley McLeod (Rocky Mount, N.C./Rocky Mount) took a pass from fellow senior David Butler (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) and chipped a shot over RMU (4-12-1, 0-10)'s goalkeeper to give the Red Flash (10-6-2, 6-3-1) the late win. For McLeod, that gives him four goals on the year which is tied for the team-lead with freshman Pablo Medina (Monterrey, Mexico/IMG Academies). The assist for Butler is his fourth of the season.

Saint Francis put up its highest shot total of the season in its final game by registering 22 shots to the Colonials nine. The Red Flash also held the advantage in corner kicks by an 8-5 margin.

Senior Darius Motazed (North Vancouver, Canada/Sentinel Secondary) recorded three saves en route to his ninth shutout of the season, which sets a new school record for single season shutouts.

The Red Flash finish the year in fifth place in the Northeast Conference, one spot out of qualifying for the postseason tournament. Additionally, of Saint Francis' 18 games this season, they blanked opposing teams 11 times, which ranks in the top-10 nationally.

“I am very proud of our seniors and will miss them all very much,” Casper said. “They are a special group of young men who did so much for our team in so many different ways. I am very proud of this team.”
