CHICAGO, Ill. (Feb. 26, 2011) - The Saint Francis men's volleyball team battled against a talented #12 Loyola team, but it was not enough as the Ramblers took three straight sets in defeating the Red Flash 3-0 (21-25, 17-25, 17-25) at Alumni Gym. The Red Flash fall to 7-8 overall, while the Ramblers improve to 12-3 overall. The teams finish the season with a split in the season series, with the home team winning each match.
Loyola got off to a fast start in the first set, taking the coast-to-coast win by a score of 25-21. The Ramblers opened up on a 5-1 run that later turned into a 9-4 advantage before Saint Francis began to close the gap. The closest the Red Flash got came at 23-20, when
John Skarupa (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegehny) and John Beck combined to block Dainis Berzins and pull the team within three points. Loyola, though, would ice the set with two of the final three points.
The Ramblers would start out hot in the second set as well, opening on a 5-1 run, but the Red Flash battled back and eventually took a lead at 10-9 thanks to a Logan Patterson kill, and increased that lead to 11-9 when Skarupa and
Ryan Williams (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) combined for a block. However, the Ramblers would right the ship and score 16 of the next 22 points to take the second set 25-17. It would also be the last time Loyola trailed for the night, as they led for the entire third set in a 25-17 victory.
The Red Flash were led offensively by
Adam Roche (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton), who finished with 10 kills, a .692 hitting percentage, and two blocks Patterson had seven kills and two aces..
