NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. (March, 15, 2011) – Kara Ledgerwood (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) and Danielle Conwell (Roxbury, N.J./Roxbury) each chipped in three goals as Saint Francis University held off Niagara, 10-8, at Niagara Field on Tuesday.
The Red Flash found themselves down 1-0 early in the game, but Ledgerwood and Conwell notched the equalizer and the go-ahead goal just over 11 minutes into the contest to give SFU a lead it would not relinquish.
A score by Kate Simmons (Delran, N.J./Delran) followed by a second pair of tallies by Ledgerwood and Conwell put the Flash up 5-1. However, two Purple Eagle goals before the intermission made the score 5-3.
Saint Francis scored five of the first six goals out of the half to take a commanding 9-3 edge with 19:08 left to play but, Niagara gained momentum as the second half wore on and kept the final outcome in question until the closing minutes.
Goalie Danielle Pokusa (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) made nine stops in the contest to lift the Flash to its third straight win after starting the season 0-4.
The Purple Eagles held a slight 25-21 edge in shots, while Saint Francis caused three more turnovers than Niagara (9-6).
SFU's Sheri Fort (Sicklerville, N.J./Washington Twp) scooped up a game-high-tying five ground balls as Simmons led all players with a season-best four assists.
Fran Pollastro paced the Eagles with two goals.
Saint Francis returns to action on Friday, March 25 when it visits Quinnipiac to open Northeast Conference play.
