BALTIMORE, Md. (Mar. 19, 2011) – For the second straight game, the Saint Francis softball team surrendered a late tying run and lost in extra innings as Brown handed the Red Flash a 4-3 setback on Saturday morning at the UMBC Spring Classic.
SFU took a brief 3-2 lead in the top of the eighth inning on an RBI single by junior Kaitlin Andler, but Jen Kries tied it with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the frame. Krist Munoz's RBI single won it in the bottom of the ninth inning for Brown, which improved to 5-3-1 on the year.
The Red Flash fell to 6-19 and will return to action against Morgan State at 10:30 on Sunday morning.
The Bears scored two runs in the first inning to jump ahead of SFU, but the Red Flash eventually tied it up with one run in the second and fourth innings.
Freshman Jasa Mitchell hit her first career home run, a solo shot, in the top of the second, and then tied it up with an RBI single in the fourth inning. With the international tie-breaker in effect, Andler delivered an RBI single to give Saint Francis a 3-2 lead in the eighth inning before Brown rallied for the tying and winning runs.
Mitchell was 3-for-4 for SFU with a run scored and two RBIs, and sophomore Brianna Garcia had a single and scored twice.
Junior
Megan Layne (Vallejo, Calif./Rodriguez) suffered the loss. She gave up two earned runs on seven hits, while striking out eight and walking two in 8.1 innings of work.
