LORETTO, Pa. (April 1, 2011) – The Saint Francis University women's lacrosse team climbed out of an early hole to and matched Bryant goal-for-goal for most of the game, but the visiting Bulldogs landed the last shot to earn a, 9-8, Northeast Conference victory at snowy DeGol Field on Friday afternoon.
Playing only their second home contest of the spring, the Red Flash found themselves down, 4-1, 17:26 into the contest before Danielle Conwell (Roxbury, N.J./Roxbury) found the back of the net twice in under four minutes.
Katie Jenkins (Rochester, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) completed the comeback by burying a Conwell feed at the 7:39 mark. Madeleine Pickett made sure the 4-all tie was short-lived, giving Bryant the lead back under three minutes later.
Catherine Helming (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) provided SFU's answer, tallying back-to-back markers to bolster the Red Flash to their first advantage of the contest, 6-5.
All signs pointed to a Saint Francis edge heading into the intermission, however the Bulldogs' Mary Green snuck a shot past keeper Danielle Pokusa (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) with five seconds left in the frame to give her team a one-goal edge at the half.
It took nearly eight minutes, but Sheri Fort (Sicklerville, N.J./Washington Twp) opened the second-half scoring to stake the Flash to their second lead of the game. Bryant scored 1:09 later to force the game's fifth tie of the afternoon and, after a lengthy scoring draught, took an 8-7 lead with just under seven minutes to play.
Fort notched her second goal of the half with 4:51 to play but 1:13 later Bryant's Lisa Vendel tacked on the eventual game-winner.
Conwell, Fort and Helming each ended up with a game-high-tying two goals apiece. Fort also tacked on a pair of assists. Helming tallied a game-high nine shots, seven of which were on goal.
The Red Flash return to action on Sunday when they welcome Central Connecticut State for a noon match.
