EMMITTSBURG, Md. (Apr. 17, 2011) – The Saint Francis softball team gave up one big inning in Game 1 and then Mount St. Mary's rallied from a 4-0 deficit in Game 2 to hand the Red Flash a tough Northeast Conference doubleheader sweep on Sunday afternoon.
The Mountaineers scored 13 runs in the fourth inning of the first game on their way to a 17-3 five inning victory, and then scored five runs in the sixth inning of Game 2 to hand SFU an 8-7 setback.
The Red Flash fell to 9-31 on the season, and 1-9 in the NEC. They will return to action with their home opener at 1 p.m. on Monday versus Sacred Heart.
Sophomore Taylor Darneille was 1-for-3 with two RBIs, freshman Chelsy Cosentino singled, walked twice and scored a run, and junior
Katie McMellen (Kingsville, OH /Edgewood) singled, walked, scored a run and drove in another for Saint Francis in Game 1.
Chloe Mizianty went 4-for-4 with two home runs, six RBIs and four runs scored to power the MSM offensive attack.
The Red Flash fell behind 3-0, but Darneille delivered a two-run single to make it 3-2 in the third inning. Mount St. Mary's responded with another run in the bottom of the inning before McMellen added an RBI single to make it 4-3 in the top of the fourth. However, the Mountaineers scored 13 runs on seven hits and two errors in the bottom of the fourth to put the game out of reach.
Darneille had another terrific game in the nightcap as she went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs. She had a triple and smashed her fourth home run of the year. Junior
Paige Smith (Saugus, Calif./Valencia) hit her first home run of the year and drove in two runs, and junior
Megan Layne (Vallejo, Calif./Rodriguez) was 2-for-3 with a run scored and one RBI.
Smith gave SFU a 2-0 lead with a two-run homer in the top of the first inning, while an RBI double by Layne and an RBI single by McMellen made it 4-0 in the second inning.
Mount St. Mary's scored two in the bottom of the second, one in the fifth and five more in the sixth to take an 8-4 lead. Darneille answered in the top of the seventh inning with a three-run home run, but the Red Flash stranded the tying run on second base to end the game.
