Mount uses big second half to derail lacrosse on Senior Day

LORETTO, Pa. (April 17, 2011) – Mount St. Mary's used an 11-2 second half to erase a halftime deficit and spoil Senior Day for the Saint Francis University lacrosse team, 16-8, at DeGol Field on Sunday. Kate Simmons (Delran, N.J./Delran) paced the Red Flash with four goals but was matched by the Mountaineers' Esther Rufolo for the game high.

The Flash battled to take a 6-5 lead at the half, despite being down 3-0 early in the contest. SFU's Danielle Conwell (Roxbury, N.J./Roxbury) drew SFU's first yellow card of the season at the 27:48 mark and Mount St. Mary's was quick to capitalize on its one-player advantage, racking up three scores during the span.

Sheri Fort (Sicklerville, N.J./Washington Twp) got the Flash on the board at the 19:56 mark and, after a Mount goal about 90 seconds later, Saint Francis scored the contest's next five goals to take a 6-4 lead.

Out of the intermission, the Mountaineers evened up the score on a Nicole Price tally and pulled ahead at the 27:48 mark on a score by Jen Semler.

Simmons scored on a free position attempt to tie the score at 7-7, however the Mount then reeled off nine consecutive goals to seal its 10th victory in the series.

Mount St. Mary's held a 38-29 advantage in shots and dominated in draw controls to the tune of 22-to-4. The Red Flash held a slim 20-to-19 edge in ground balls.

Senior goalie Danielle Pokusa (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) made 15 stops in the setback, while the Mountaineers' tandem of Brigid McTavish and Sarah Lane Leder combined for 11 saves.

Saint Francis returns to action on Wednesday when it welcomes the Detroit Titans for a 4 p.m. match.
