MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. (April 2, 2011) – The Saint Francis University men's tennis team remained unbeaten in Northeast Conference play with a, 6-1, victory over Wagner indoors at the Lakeview Tennis Center. Now 3-0 in the NEC, the Red Flash can take a huge step toward locking up a favorable seed at the upcoming leagues championships with a win at Robert Morris on Sunday.
“I don't think we played our best tennis today,” said SFU head coach Paul Tobin. “But, enough to secure wins in the Nos. 2-6 spots as well as pick up the doubles point.”
“We are going to really have to pick things up on Sunday when we play Robert Morris. They are coming off some big wins and we are going to have to play our best.”
In doubles play,
Elahn Pogue (St. Catherines, Ontario/West Park) and Nathaniel Fleming took the first match by default followed by a convincing 8-2 win by
Youlian Natchev (Sofia, Bulgaria/Rovel College) and
Kirby Mendes (Unionville, Ontario/Niagara Academy of Tennis) in the No. 2 spot.
Stephen Kowalski (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East) and
Andres Rosa (Carolina, Puerto Rico/Colegio la Piedad) kept the positive momentum at No. 3, squeaking out an 8-7 victory.
The Flash picked up singles wins in the Nos. 2-6 spots to cruise to the team victory. After a loss by Pogue at No. 1 singles, the remainder of the Saint Francis lineup won in straight sets and by lopsided scores.
Stephen Kowalski (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East) and
Youlian Natchev (Sofia, Bulgaria/Rovel College) turned in the strongest performances, winning the Nos. 4 and 6 positions by identical 6-0, 6-2 marks.
“It's good to see strong results at the bottom half,” said Tobin. “This has been our biggest challenge: Trying to secure wins at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions.”
