Flash fall to Robert Morris in season finale

LORETTO, Pa. (April 21, 2011) – Despite matching playoff-bound Robert Morris goal-for-goal in the second half, it was a case of too little too late for the Saint Francis University lacrosse team as it fell, 17-11, in its season finale at DeGol Field on Thursday.

The Colonials – who are in line for a No. 2 seed in the upcoming Northeast Conference postseason – led 9-3 after the first half before equaling the Red Flash 8-8 in the second.

Saint Francis wraps up the 2011 season with a record of 5-12, including a 1-8 mark in NEC play. Robert Morris evened its record at 8-8 while going an impressive 7-2 against league opponents.

Robert Morris scored the contest's first seven goals before Kara Ledgerwood (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) put Saint Francis on the board at the 13:50 mark. Catherine Helming (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) and Kate Simmons (Delran, N.J./Delran) also got into the scoring column as the Flash cut their deficit to 7-3, but the Colonials tallied the final two goals of the period to go into intermission with a six-goal lead.

The Colonials notched five of the first six goals of the second half to go up 14-4, however, starting with a Helming lamplighter at the 16:21 mark, the Flash outscored RMU 7-3 until time ran out on any hope of a comeback.

Helming led the Flash with four goals, while Ledgerwood and Danielle Conwell (Roxbury, N.J./Roxbury) each scored two. Rachel Larson dished out a game-high tying three assists.

RMU's Colleen O'Donnell led both teams with six goals.

The Colonials outshot the Red Flash 41-to-22 in the contest, but held a slight 17-to-15 edge as SFU staged its second half rally. Robert Morris also held a sizeable advantage in draw controls (20-to-10) and forced 10 of SFU's 20 turnovers.

In her final collegiate game, Saint Francis goalie Danielle Pokusa (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) made 14 saves to raise her school-record career total to 638.
