Men's soccer shuts out Pittsburgh

Red Flash pick up second program win over Pitt

Box Score

LORETTO, Pa. (Aug. 29, 2011)
– The Saint Francis University men's soccer team earned its second shutout in as many games when they defeated the Pittsburgh Panthers Monday afternoon at the Stokes Soccer Complex by the final tally of 3-0.

For the Red Flash, the win is just the second victory over the Panthers in the program's history. Even though Pittsburgh has had Saint Francis' number over the years, the Flash dominated the tempo and the control of the match.

"I am very pleased with our performance today,” head coach Michael Casper said. “We were solid from back to front and we controlled the tempo of the game. Today we talked about imposing our style of play and I thought we did that throughout the match. We scored some great goals and hopefully we can keep this going as we get ready for Bucknell on Thursday."

The contest remained scoreless for the majority of the first half until junior Wayne Tiller (Magnolia, Del./Caesar Rodney) took a feed off a corner kick by freshman Pablo Medina (Monterrey, Mexico/IMG Academies) to give SFU the late first half lead at the 37:39 mark. For Tiller he notches his first goal of the season, while Medina picks up his first collegiate assist.

From that point Saint Francis put up a number of shots, including a bullet from outside the box that landed senior co-captain David Butler (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) with his first goal of the season. A quick touch-and-go from freshman Mitch Kavlick (Erie, Pa./Erie McDowell) to senior Kingsley McLeod (Rocky Mount, N.C./Rocky Mount) came directly to the right foot of Butler, who launched it past Pittsburgh's goalkeeper Hami Kara, to put SFU up 2-0 with just under 40 minutes remaining in the game.

Throughout most of the match, both teams demonstrated a very aggressive style of play, which was evident on the score sheet. In all, 23 fouls were handed out, 12 for the Panthers and 11 for the Red Flash, along with three yellow cards and one red card to the Panthers Ryan Myers at 69:51, causing Pittsburgh to play down a man for the remainder of the game.

Saint Francis made quick work of the one-man advantage when sophomore Tobi Iguade (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) received a short feed from classmate Nick Kolarac (Pittsburgh, Pa./West Allegheny) and floated it up and over the head of the Pittsburgh goalkeeper, giving him his first goal of the season.

Senior Darius Motazed (North Vancouver, Canada/Sentinel Secondary) and sophomore Thomas McWilliams (Mermaid Waters, Australia/Palm Beach Currumbin) split time in net, with Motazed seeing action in the entire first half, thus making him the keeper of record. Motazed and McWilliams each made two saves during their time in net. The Red Flash outshot the Panthers by a 16-7 margin, and came out on the top side of corner kicks as well, 8-4 in Saint Francis' favor.

Casper and his team look to keep the momentum rolling when they travel to Lewisburg, Pa. this Thursday Sept. 1 for a non-conference battle with Bucknell beginning at 7 p.m.
