WASHINGTON, D.C. (Sept. 11, 2011) – The Georgetown Hoyas outlasted the Saint Francis University women's soccer team, 1-0, at North Kehoe Field on Sunday afternoon. The Hoyas held a 9-to-3 advantage in shots on goal in the contest, which saw Mary Kroening score the game-winner in the 82nd minute.
“Our defense was tremendous,” said head coach
Brenda van Stralen. “Georgetown is a very good team, but a lot of their shots went wide or high because of the pressure we were able to apply. Everybody on both sides battled for 90 minutes.”
The Red Flash had four solid scoring chances in the match, three of which resulted in shots on goal. The Hoyas racked up 33 shots, with only the game-winner reaching the back of the net, thanks to a stout defense and an eight-save day by SFU goalkeeper Briana Butcher.
Sophomore
Barbara Maros de Carvalho (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Sagrado Coraco de Jesus) led the Flash with two shots, both of which were on goal. The loss snapped SFU's three-game winning streak and dropped it to 3-3 on the season.
Saint Francis continues its two-game stay in D.C. with a 4 p.m. match at George Mason on Tuesday.
