LORETTO, Pa. (Sept. 25, 2011) – Behind senior
Kingsley McLeod (Rocky Mount, N.C./Rocky Mount)'s four point performance, the Saint Francis University men's soccer team concluded non-conference play with a dominating 3-0 win over Canisius Sunday afternoon at the Stokes Soccerplex.
“This was a good day for our team,” head coach
Michael Casper said. “We scored three great goals and kept a clean sheet. We had a lot of very good moments but we still need to be able to control tempo a bit better throughout the match.”
Wasting no time to get on the board, at the 1:26 mark of the first half, senior
Taylor Powers (Petaluma, Calif./Casa Grande) sent a pass up the right side of the field to McLeod. McLeod then crossed the ball over to freshman
Pablo Medina (Monterrey, Mexico/IMG Academies), who chipped the ball into the left side of the net, giving the Red Flash (4-3-1) an early lead. The goal for Medina is his second of the season.
Defense took over for the majority of the match from then out until the 80
th minute, when McLeod notched his third goal of the season by sending a pass from
Nick Kolarac (Pittsburgh, Pa./West Allegheny) and Powers over the head of the Griffins (2-6-0) goalkeeper.
Two minutes later the Flash would pad its lead further, this time off the toe of Kolarac, who recorded the first goal of his collegiate career on a long range shot from outside the box. McLeod and
Alex Hainault (Montreal, Quebec/Westwood) were credited with assists on the score, Hainault's first collegiate assist.
Proving to be a very physical match, the Red Flash picked up 11 fouls to Canisius' eight, but the Griffs were issued four yellow cards to SFU's one, that was issued to junior
Wayne Tiller (Magnolia, Del./Caesar Rodney). Saint Francis outshot the Griffs by a 14-12 margin and held the advantage in corner kicks, 4-3.
Senior
Darius Motazed (North Vancouver, Canada/Sentinel Secondary) got the start in net for Saint Francis, played all 90 minutes, made two saves and picked up his second shutout victory of the season.
“This is a great end to our out of conference schedule and now we have to get ready for our conference games,” Casper said.
Saint Francis opens up Northeast Conference action Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. when Fairleigh Dickinson visits Loretto.
