LORETTO, Pa. – The Saint Francis University field hockey team opened its home schedule Sunday with a 3-0 win against Lehigh.
The Red Flash (1-2) used three second half scores to earn their first win of the season and their second consecutive home opening win against the Mountain Hawks (0-2).
Autumn Pellman (Millerstown, Pa./Greenwood) led the way offensively as she netted her first two goals of the season. Jill Dicola posted her first shut out of the season making four saves in net.
Saint Francis and Lehigh played a scoreless first half but the Red Flash controlled the pace and outshot the Mountain Hawks 10-2 in the first frame. SFU also tallied five penalty corners and did not surrender one to Lehigh. The Mountain Hawks goalie Sydney Maltinsky made three first period saves and got help from Emily Hu, who earned two defensive saves.
Pellman broke through at the 41:47 mark of the game on an excellent passing play started by
Tia Dudukovich (Port Matilda, Pa./State College Area). She passed it between two Lehigh defenders to
Nikki Snyder (Harveys Lake, Pa./Lake-Lehman), who in turn crossed it to Pellman who sent it into the net. SFU continued its offensive attack as
Jocelyn Scillia (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) fought off a Lehigh defender to make it a 2-0 lead for SFU at 49:57 of the first half. Pellman continued her big day with a goal on a cross from
Kellie Mason (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich) at the 68:25 mark of the match to seal the win for the Red Flash.
Saint Francis returns to action Wednesday when the Red Flash travel to Lock Haven for 6 p.m. start against their instate rival.
