BOX SCORE MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. (Oct. 14, 2012) – After a 14th minute goal by Robert Morris' Alexa Sarsfield, the Saint Francis U women's soccer team found itself trailing a Northeast Conference opponent for the first time this season.
The advantage, which also marked the first goal surrendered by the Red Flash to an NEC foe this season, lasted about three minutes before SFU surged back to claim a 4-1 win over the Colonials on Sunday afternoon.
The Flash (9-4-2) dominated on both sides of the field while improving to 6-0 in league play. SFU fired a season-high 31 shots – including 15 on goal – while allowing only four Colonial shots. Saint Francis also held a 7-to-1 edge in corners.
Furthering her strong case for a third consecutive NEC Player of the Year nod,
Tesa McKibben (Cogan Station, Pa./Montoursville) led the Red Flash with a goal and two assists.
Barbara Maros de Carvalho (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Sagrado Coraco de Jesus) also picked up a pair of assists as a total of six Flash figured into the day's scoring.
However, it was the Colonials (1-13-2; 1-4-1 NEC) that drew first blood.
After an early SFU scoring chance from Eloa Nascimento, a relatively harmless looking free kick 40 yards from net by junior Alexa Sarsfield curled from right-to-left and fooled keeper
Brianna Butcher (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow) who was off her line and could only watch the shot sail over her head.
Less than three minutes later McKibben stuck for the equalizer. The NEC scoring leader stole the ball from a Colonial defender and dribbled left across the top of the penalty box. After finding space, her shot cleared the head of RMU keeper Becky Schoenecker before sliding under the crossbar to knot the game, 1-1, in the 17th minute.
The goal was her 12th of the campaign.
Saint Francis went on to score twice more to earn a 3-1 lead going into the intermission.
In the 31st minute, a cross to the far post by McKibben was deftly touched back to the top of box to
Hallie Rexer (Mountain Top, Pa./Holy Redeemer) by Maros de Carbalho. Rexer's right footed shot started to the left post, but struck a defender and caught Schoenecker who had already reacted to the initial strike.
Only four minutes later, McKibben helped set up another score to up her league-leading point total to 34. A free kick from 30 yards out by McKibben was played low and just to the left of the RMU wall. That's where
Alecia McNiff (Marietta, Pa./Donegal ) had beaten her defender and put her first touch shot inside the right post to make it 3-1 with less 10 minutes to play in the opening half.
The Red Flash closed out the scoring just 46 seconds into the second half. A pass by Maros de Carvalho found
Jennifer Brennan (Northport, N.Y./Northport) streaking down the right wing. Gavin's cross went to the near post where
Ellie Gavin (Hilliard, Ohio/Bishop Watterson)'s first touch sent the ball into the left side netting.
