LORETTO, Pa. (Oct. 19, 2012) – The Saint Francis University field hockey team moved its winning streak to five Friday with a come-from-behind, 2-1, win against Sacred Heart at DeGol Field.
Autumn Pellman (Millerstown, Pa./Greenwood) scored a little over six minutes into overtime to rally the Red Flash (10-4, 4-0) past the upset-minded Pioneers (5-9, 0-4).
Tia Dudukovich (Port Matilda, Pa./State College Area) scored with 4:55 left in regulation to even the contest at one after a early second-half goal had Sacred Heart on top late.
Kate Vitali (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) made seven saves in the cage and SFU picked up a huge defensive save by
Carissa Makea (Auckland, New Zealand/Rosehill College) in overtime to keep Sacred Heart from coming away with its first conference win.
"Sacred Heart came out with a great game plan and we found a way to come back and get the win." said head coach
Stacey Bean.
Saint Francis controled the first half action outshooting the Pioneers, 12-3, and out-cornering Sacred Heart 9-1. SFU looked strong but Mary Altepeter did great work in the cage for Sacred Heart making six first half saves and kept the game scoreless at the intermission.
Sacred Heart gained confidence with each with each offensive possession and slowly and surely figured out the Flash defense. The Pioneers earned a penalty corner a little over 12 minutes into the second half and capitalized. Stephanie Frye triggered the play off the corner and found Liz Bergman at the top of their arc and she found the net for the fifth time this season. The goal boasted the confidence of the Pioneers and improved their ball possession. The Flash got a chance with less than five minutes remaining on a penalty corner.
Tia Dudukovich (Port Matilda, Pa./State College Area) triggered the play from the corner and found
Lottie Chipego (Dallas, Pa./Lake-Lehman), who passed inside to Pellman the sophomore fired a shot under a diving Altepter and Dudukovich pushed it the final few inches to even the score at one.
In extra time both teams posted chances and Sacred Heart looked like they might have had the game won when a shot slipped by Vitali but Makea was on the goal line and deflected the ball out to keep the game even. Following the big defensive save by Makea the Red Flash were able to counter attack. Dudukovich found
Selena Adamshick (Harveys Lake, Pa./Lake-Lehman) with a long pass and the rookie tipped it past Altepeter, to Pellman and the sophomore tallied her 12th goal of the season and won the game for SFU.
Saint Francis returns to action Sunday with a conference match up against Quinnipiac, the game is set for a 1 p.m. start and will be senior day for the Flash.
