Red Flash earn 0-0 tie with NEC’s top-team FDU

BOX SCORE TEANECK, N.J. (Oct. 19, 2012) – The Saint Francis University men's soccer team picked up a hard fought 0-0 tie Friday night on the road against Fairleigh Dickinson, the top-ranked team in the Northeast Conference.

"The guys played hard tonight and battled against a very good side in FDU," head coach Michael Casper said. "We defended well and gave ourselves chances to win but it was not to be tonight. We will take the point and move on to Sunday."

Alex Hainault (Montreal, Quebec/Westwood) provided the Red Flash (5-6-3, 3-2-1 NEC) with its first scoring chance of the game seven minutes in with a shot that went wide of the net. FDU (7-4-3, 4-0-2 NEC) recorded the next three shots all within a minute and a half span but the SFU defense did not allow any one of those shots to reach starting keeper Daniel Valcicak (Herndon, Va./Gonzaga College).

Pedro Machado (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/Salesiano Santa Rosa) took the team's first corner kick of the evening in the 23rd minute and set up an offensive chance for the Flash's leading point getter Nick Kolarac (Pittsburgh, Pa./West Allegheny) who fired a shot wide. The Knights finished the first half with a 9-4 advantage in shots but neither side tested the opposing goal keeper much in the opening period.

It wasn't until the 72nd minute of action that either keeper needed to make a save. Valcicak stopped a header by FDU's Nicholas Walker that kept the game scoreless. That was the only save either keeper was forced to make in regulation and the game headed into overtime with no score.

Shortly into the first overtime period Machado sent a ball in off a set piece to the head of Tamas Maffey-Stumpe (Cairns, Queensland, Australia/Mossman State) who pushed the header just wide of giving Saint Francis the win. A few minutes later it was Mitch Kavlick (Erie, Pa./Erie McDowell)'s turn to try his luck at notching a goal as his shot required Knights keeper Jacob Lissek to make his first save of the night. As time in the first overtime period ticked down, Valcicak came up big for the second time in the contest, making a save on Nico Wright to send the game even further into a second overtime.

The Red Flash registered a few solid scoring chances in the final overtime period with two corner kicks and a shot sent wide by James Price (Christchurch, New Zealand/St. Andrew’s College) but could not turn those chances into a goal.

Kolarac led the Flash with four shots in the game while Valcicak made two saves to give him his sixth shutout of the season and the 11th of his career. The Flash pick up one point with the tie, giving them 10 on the year, four behind conference leader FDU.

Saint Francis will play its final road contest Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. when they travel to West Long Branch, N.J. to take on Monmouth.
