Flash shuts down FDU to set up pivotal showdown at Monmouth

BOX SCORE TEANECK, N.J. (Oct. 19, 2012) – The Saint Francis U women's soccer team leaned on its shutdown defense and mustered just enough scoring to pick up a 1-0 Northeast Conference win at Fairleigh Dickinson on Friday.

The victory stretched SFU's unbeaten streak to nine matches – the longest in program history – and gave the Red Flash two points in the race to clinch the NEC regular season title.  SFU (10-4-2; 7-0 NEC) now has a two-point edge in the standings heading into Sunday's showdown with second-place Monmouth.

Flash junior Tesa McKibben (Cogan Station, Pa./Montoursville) furnished the game-winning goal in the in the 26th minute when Jennifer Brennan (Northport, N.Y./Northport) dished the ball from the right side after a corner kick.  As Brennan's pass arrived at the far post, McKibben was there to finish from six yards out.

It was the 15th game-winner of McKibben's career and her NEC-leading 13th marker of the campaign.

From there the Flash back line made the advantage hold up by shutting out its sixth league foe in seven tries.  Fairleigh Dickinson (5-8-3; 2-6 NEC) managed only four shots on the afternoon, three of which were on goal.

With the three-save outing, senior keeper Brianna Butcher (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow) picked up her 17th career shutout to move within two of Melanie Stockman's six-year-old Saint Francis record.

The Red Flash tested Knights goalkeeper Felicia Burr with 10 shots.  Burr wound up with four saves.

Saint Francis wraps up its final road trip of the regular season at Monmouth (9-5-2; 6-1-1 NEC) on Sunday.  The opening kick is set for noon.
