0-0 tie with Monmouth concludes road schedule for men’s soccer

BOX SCORE WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. (Oct. 21, 2012) – As was the case Friday night, the Saint Francis University men's soccer team earned a 0-0 double overtime tie against Northeast Conference foe Monmouth Sunday afternoon, giving the team one more point towards its postseason goal.

“Today we defended well and got a shutout against a very good team on the road,” head coach Michael Casper said. “We have to do a better job of keeping the ball and creating chances but I loved our team's effort, commitment and organization today. We will keep working to improve and prepare ourselves for another important NEC weekend.”

Daniel Valcicak (Herndon, Va./Gonzaga College) posted his seventh shutout of the season and the 12th of his collegiate career in the tie and needed to make just three saves in the 110 minutes of play. His opposing team counterpart Alex Blackburn was tested once in the game on a header shot early in the second half by Ryan Byers (Scottdale, Pa./Southmoreland).

The Monmouth (9-3-3, 4-1-2 NEC) defense held the Red Flash (5-6-4, 3-2-2 NEC) to a total of eight shots in the contest, five of which came in the second half alone. Despite the Hawks firing 15 shots of their own in the game, only three of them ended up on target and in dangerous territory.

Perhaps the best time for Monmouth to uneven the score came in the first overtime period when they set up three corner kicks within three minutes of each other. The Hawks managed to get just one shot off however off of those set pieces and Valcicak came up strong by making the save to keep the game scoreless. Neither team could do much offensively in the final overtime period as Byers put up the only shot of the 10-minute period that sailed wide.

By picking up two points on this weekend New Jersey roadtrip, the Flash men have collected 11 on the year and sit in fifth place in the NEC standings behind Fairleigh Dickinson (17 pts.), Central Connecticut State (16 pts.), Monmouth (14 pts.) and this Friday's opponent Quinnipiac (13 pts.).

Saint Francis returns to the Stokes Soccerplex this Friday for a conference showdown with Quinnipiac at 3 p.m. That game can be viewed live on NEC Front Row.
