BOX SCORE LORETTO, Pa. (Oct. 26, 2012) – Friday afternoon the Quinnipiac Bobcats handed the Saint Francis University men's soccer team a 2-0 defeat at the Stokes Soccerplex.
"Today was very disappointing. We made simple mistakes that cost goals and at this point in the season those kind of things can't happen," head coach
Michael Casper said. "We also need to be better up front as this is the fourth game in a row now that we have been held off the scoreboard. We know that we have to be better and now the next two games become must win matches and in that scenario and under that type of pressure this team always responds."
With the loss, the Red Flash fell to 5-7-4 overall and 3-3-2 in the Northeast Conference and remain with 11 points on the year. Quinnipiac on the other hand improves to 7-5-2 and 5-1-1 in the NEC and bump up to 16 points to hold onto the fourth playoff spot. Saint Francis is still in the postseason hunt but will need some outside help from other teams around the league.
The Bobcats got scores in each of the halves on 14 total shots taken in the match.
James Price (Christchurch, New Zealand/St. Andrew’s College) collected the game's first solid scoring opportunity when he headed the ball into the hands of the Bobcats keeper. The Red Flash controlled the ball in QU's end for much of the beginning of the contest but the Bobcats countered with their first goal at 26:15. Quinnipiac's William Cavallo notched his first goal of the season on a shot from outside the 18-yard box that rolled off the hands of a diving
Daniel Valcicak (Herndon, Va./Gonzaga College) and into the back of the net.
Quinnipiac scored an insurance goal just about four minutes into the start of the second half when goalkeeper Borja Angoitia launched a goal kick downfield to a streaking Machel Baker who chipped in a shot that put the Bobcats up 2-0.
Shaun Russell (Chesapeake, Va./Norfolk Collegiate) and
Ty Geesey (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) recorded the last two shots for SFU in the final five minutes of regulation, forcing Angoitia to make saves on both shots. Angoitia finished with six saves in the game to keep the Flash off the board and earn his fourth shutout of the season. The Flash did hold the upper hand in corner kicks in the game 5-2.
Saint Francis will be back home next weekend for their final two regular season games against LIU Brooklyn Friday and Mount St. Mary's Sunday for senior day. Times and locations could change due to the NEC Women's Soccer Championships.
