BOX SCORE LORETTO, Pa. (Nov. 4, 2012) – On a senior day afternoon the Saint Francis University men's soccer team earned a 0-0 double overtime tie with Mount St. Mary's at DeGol Field. The tie clinches a postseason playoff berth for the Red Flash as the No. 4 seed.
“I thought we created a number of chances today and put the Mount under a lot of pressure,” head coach
Michael Casper said. “Their goalkeeper was tremendous on the day and made a number of great saves and that kept them in the game. I am a little disappointed we weren't able to find a goal and win for our seniors but the tie was enough to get us into the playoffs and we are excited that we will be playing next weekend. The boys are motivated, hungry and looking to make some things happen as we enter into the NEC playoffs.”
Saint Francis finishes the regular season with a 6-7-5 overall record, a 4-3-3 mark in Northeast Conference play and 15 points. Sacred Heart also finished the year with 15 points but SFU holds the tiebreaker over the Pioneers after they defeated them 1-0 earlier in the season.
The Red Flash dominated the statistical stat sheet, outshooting the Mountaineers 27-13 through the two overtimes and collected 19 corner kicks. Despite the dominance SFU struggled to find the back of the net after a numerous amount of close calls.
SFU collected three shots and a corner kick within a minute of each other in the first overtime period but Mount keeper Peter Steve came up big for his team making all three stops.
With three minutes remaining in the second overtime,
Tamas Maffey-Stumpe (Cairns, Queensland, Australia/Mossman State) drew a foul to set up an identical free kick that he scored on Friday night against LIU Brooklyn but the shot went just high above the crossbar.
Daniel Valcicak (Herndon, Va./Gonzaga College) did what he needed to in goal to preserve the scoreless tie, recording eight saves in the game, one in the final overtime period.
Nick Kolarac (Pittsburgh, Pa./West Allegheny) led the Flash with five shots on the afternoon.
For the year, SFU tallied 13 goals and nine shutouts to finish with a 0.72 goals per game average. Kolarac finished the regular season as the team leader with five goals and 12 points. Next behind Kolarac is
Wayne Tiller (Magnolia, Del./Caesar Rodney) who tallied two goals and two assists for a total of six points.
Saint Francis heads to Hamden, Conn. this weekend for the NEC tournament and will face No. 1 seeded Quinnipiac Friday for the semifinal round, a team they lost 2-0 to just over a week ago. This weekend marks the fifth NEC tournament appearance for the Red Flash in program history.
