LORETTO, Pa. (Feb. 11, 2012)
– For the fourth consecutive match, the Saint Francis University men's volleyball team ends up on the winning side of the ball, today by sweeping Rutgers-Newark 3-0 (26-24, 25-13, 25-17) at DeGol Arena.

The Red Flash (5-6, 2-0 EIVA) got off to a sluggish start in the opening set, falling behind 7-3 early on. Saint Francis battled back though and a strong kill from Alex Kane (York, Pa./West York) ricocheted off the hands of a Scarlet Raiders (4-3, 1-2 EIVA) defender and tied the score at 11. SFU took its first lead of the first set after another kill from Kane put them up 17-16. An unforced error by the Flash allowed Rutgers-Newark to even the count at 20 apiece. Kane came up big once again in the dying moments of the first set with back-to-back kills to tie the Scarlet Raiders and then take the lead 24-23. A service error on Rutgers-Newark and a double block by Logan Patterson (Derry, Pa./Derry Area) and Adam Roche (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton) gave the Flash the 26-24 set win and put them up 1-0 in the match.

In the second set, SFU jumped out to an early 9-2 advantage before Rutgers-Newark called a timeout. The Scarlet Raiders never challenged the Red Flash for the lead and Saint Francis easily took care of business to put them up 2-0 heading into the third set. SFU went on a 13-6 run to close out the set.

SFU slid out to another early lead in set number three, taking a 10-4 advantage to start. Similar to the previous set, the Red Flash were never in danger of vanquishing the lead and took the set 25-17 and the match in straight sets.

Setting a new team season-high in attack percentage, the Red Flash hit an impressive .470 for the match, its highest mark since they hit .533 against the same team in March of 2007. SFU hammered down 39 kills and had only eight errors. Kane continued the strong start to his senior campaign with 15 kills, just one error and a .737 hitting percentage, a new career-high. Also having another solid game for the Flash was Mark Kochan who hit .778 with seven kills on nine swings. Libero Nicholas Bancroft dug the ball seven times while setter Ryan Williams (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) dished out 29 assists in the win. Rounding out the list of top performers for SFU was Roche whose blocking continues to be deadly as he put up another five blocking assists Saturday afternoon.

Saint Francis hits the road next weekend to continue EIVA action, traveling first to Fairfield, Conn. for a 7 p.m. matchup next Friday against Sacred Heart.
